In the face of rapid population aging and the increasing prevalence of dementia, the contemporary Church is confronted with a pressing theological and ethical question: How should it respond to the spiritual needs of believers living with dementia? Dementia poses more than a decline in cognitive ability; it presents profound challenges marked by loss, fear, and isolation for individuals, families, and faith communities. This study reconsiders the theological significance of worship and sacramental life in this context and explores how the Church can embrace persons with dementia not merely as care recipients, but as active participants in the life of the body of Christ. From a practical theological perspective, the paper investigates how individuals with dementia can continue to engage relationally with God and remain united with the ecclesial community through participation in worship and the sacraments. Rather than reducing dementia to the loss of cognition, the study affirms the theological foundation that every person, regardless of mental capacity, bears the imago Dei and retains inherent dignity. Such persons can participate meaningfully in sacramental life through the faithfulness of God and the memory of the Church. In these acts, they encounter divine presence and saving grace. The research further critiques traditional sacramental frameworks that privilege cognitive understanding and verbal confession of faith, highlighting their exclusionary tendencies. Drawing upon dementia theology, it examines how the sacraments function as means of grace for people with dementia, and how such participation sustains their spiritual identity and inner self. Even in the face of memory loss, the study argues, persons with dementia remain covenantal partners with God, fully capable of sacramental participation, through which they maintain a sense of belonging and faith identity. This approach reframes the sacraments not merely as confirmations of personal belief, but as theological events of relational grace wherein God remembers them. In conclusion, this paper moves beyond viewing individuals with dementia solely as passive care recipients, offering a theological rationale for recognizing them as spiritual agents within the Church. By proposing a new paradigm of liturgical praxis, and engaging in dialogue with disability theology, it lays the theoretical and practical groundwork for a more inclusive sacramental life. This vision not only affirms the full participation of those with dementia, but also opens the door to more accessible worship for all believers with cognitive or physical disabilities.

현대 교회는 고령화와 치매 인구의 급증 속에서 치매 신자의 영적 필요에 어떻게 응 답할 것인가? 라는 신학적 윤리적 과제에 직면해 있다. 치매는 단순한 인지적 기능의 저하를 넘어, 개인과 가족, 더 나아가 공동체 전반에 걸쳐 상실감·두려움·고립을 유발 하는 매우 심각한 도전이다. 본 연구는 이러한 상황에서의 예배와 성례전의 신학적 의미를 재조명하고, 교회 공동체가 치매 신자를 어떻게 환대하며 돌봄의 주체로 함께 할 수 있을지를 모색하였다. 이 연구는 실천신학적 관점에서 치매 신자의 예배 및 성 례전 참여를 통해 하나님과의 관계성, 그리고 교회 공동체와의 일치를 어떻게 지속할 수 있을지를 탐색한다. 이를 위해, 치매를 단순히 인지 능력의 상실로 환원하지 않고, 여전히 ‘하나님의 형상’대로 창조된 존엄한 인격으로 이해해야 한다는 신학적 기초를 검토하였다. 이들은 하나님의 신실하심과 공동체의 기억 안에서 예배와 성례전에 참 여할 수 있으며, 그 참여는 하나님의 임재와 구원의 사건을 체험하는 은혜의 통로로 작용한다. 또한, 전통적 성례전 이해가 지닌 한계, 특히 인지적 이해와 신앙고백을 전 제하는 배제적 요소를 비판적으로 분석하며, 치매신학(Dementia Theology)의 관점에 서 성례전이 치매 신자에게 어떤 방식으로 은총을 전달하는지를 고찰하였다. 이 과정 에서 치매 신자의 성례전 참여가 그들의 신앙 정체성과 어떻게 연결되며, 영적 자아 를 어떻게 유지할 수 있는지를 규명하고자 하였다. 이러한 논의를 통해 치매 신자가 기억을 잃는다 해도 하나님과의 언약적 관계 안에서 여전히 성례전에 온전히 참여할 수 있으며, 이를 통해 공동체성과 신앙 정체성을 유지할 수 있음을 드러낸다. 치매 신 자를 위한 성례전 이해는 단순히 개인적 신앙의 확인을 넘어, ‘하나님께서 그들을 기 억하신다’라는 관계적 은총을 실현하는 신학적 사건으로 해석되어야 할 것이다. 결론 적으로 본 논문은 치매 신자를 단순한 돌봄의 대상으로만 보는 시각을 넘어서, 그들 을 교회 공동체 안에서 영적 주체로 존중해야 한다는 신학적 근거를 제시하였다. 나 아가, 예배 실천신학의 새로운 패러다임을 제안함으로써, 장애신학과의 연계를 통해 교회의 성례전적 포용성을 확장할 수 있는 이론적·실천적 기반을 마련하였다. 이는 치매 신자뿐 아니라, 인지적 혹은 신체적 장애를 지닌 모든 신자에게도 더욱 열린 예배와 성례전 참여를 가능케 하는 데 기여하게 될 것이다.
