Despite longstanding discourse surrounding the role of preaching in addressing social issues, the church is often perceived as a community lacking rational engagement and self-reflection. This perception, however, stems from internal shortcomings. Encouragingly, both academic scholars and pastoral practitioners have increasingly called for a renewed ecclesiology and contextually responsive preaching, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. These voices advocate for the church to reposition itself as a responsible and socially engaged community. Nevertheless, preaching on social issues remains a complex task for many pastors. This challenge arises from problematic precedents and varying levels of congregational receptivity. Social issue preaching is frequently misunderstood as limited to political or ideological grand narratives, resulting in discomfort and disengagement among congregants. This study offers a practical framework for preaching on social issues. It redefines the social dimension of preaching as encompassing not only political discourse but also the everyday realities of congregants—family, education, work, and broader societal interactions. Preaching must be grounded in an understanding of these lived experiences and aim to foster communal reflection on how biblical values can interrupt or transform societal patterns. In doing so, preaching becomes a means of cultivating a Word-centered community that lives out the message it receives. The study reviews prior domestic and international research, tracing developments from Dietrich Ritschl’s work in the 1960s and the Lausanne Covenant of 1974 to the resurgence of interest in Korea post-2010 and following the pandemic. It then establishes a theological foundation by examining Scripture, ecclesiology, homiletics, the role of the preacher, and the nature of the congregation. Practical strategies include the starting point: the church becoming the church, the preacher’s positioning: adopting a posture of ‘not knowing’ and ‘standing by’, and sample sermon manuscripts on the theme of suffering.

사회적 이슈 설교에 대한 오랜 시간 다양한 견해가 꾸준히 제기되는데도 교회가 마치 합리적 사고나 대화를 할 수 없고 자기반성도 없는 집단처럼 인식되는 데는 우리 자 신의 책임이 있다. 그러나 오래전부터 그리고 코로나를 겪으면서 이러한 점을 반성하 고 새로운 교회론과 시대와 소통하는 설교를 고민하며 책임지는 공동체로 자리매김하 자는 목소리가 학자들에게서만 아니라 현장 목회자들 사이에서도 커지고 있는 건 고 무적이다. 그런데도 현장 설교자에게 사회적 이슈가 여전히 쉽지 않은 건 잘못된 사 례들이 많고 설교자가 속한 공동체의 수용성 정도가 다르기 때문이다. 사회적 이슈 설교를 정치 사회적 거대 담론에 대한 접근으로 한정해 나와는 상관없는 것으로 이해 하면서 느끼는 불편함도 존재한다. 본 연구는 사회적 이슈를 어떻게 설교할 것인지 가이드를 제공한다. 설교의 사회적 성격은 꼭 정치나 사회 이슈가 아니라 회중 모두 또는 개인의 일상, 가정, 학업, 직장 등에 연결되어 있다. 회중은 교회 밖 사람들과 다 를 바 없이 학교, 직장, 각종 단체 등 사회 전반의 보편적인 일상과 공간을 공유한다. 설교가 회중의 삶과 분리된 게 아니라 그들의 삶에 대한 이해 그리고 그 삶의 토대이 자 그 삶을 포함한 사회의 다양한 이슈에 기초해 전달되고 그래서 그들의 공감을 얻 고 설교자와 회중이 현실 속 문제를 어떻게 성경 속 가치관을 가지고 중단하거나 개선할지 함께 고민하며 설교한 대로, 말씀을 들은 대로 살아가는 말씀공동체를 지향하 는 게 본 연구의 방향이다. 선행연구는 국내외에서 다양하게 진행되었는데 국외 연구 는 상당히 오랜 역사를 갖는다. 디트리히 리츨(Dietrich Ritschl)의 1960년대 주장을 필두로 로잔언약이 작성된 1974년으로부터 국내에서 관련 연구가 활발해지기 시작한 2010년경까지 다양한 연구가 개진되었다. 국내에서는 2000년도에 들어오며 드물게 나 타났으나 2010년을 넘어서며 본격적으로 전개되었고 코로나를 지나며 다시 상승세를 보이며 오늘에 이른다. 본 고는 사회적 이슈 설교의 선행연구를 정리하고 이론적 토 대를 위해 각각 성경, 교회, 설교, 설교자, 회중에 대한 이해를 정리했다. 실천적 방안 으로 사회적 이슈 설교의 출발점: 교회의 교회 됨, 사회적 이슈 설교자의 포지셔닝: 알지 못함(not knowing)과 곁에 섬(standing by)을 제안했고 사회적 이슈 설교의 실 례로는 ‘고통’을 주제로 각각 개인적 아픔과 시대적 아픔에 대해 어떻게 설교할 것인 지 원리를 제안하고 그에 따른 설교 구성과 실제 설교원고를 제시했다.
