The recent rapid development of Generative AI composition technology has brought about changes in the methods and subjects of music creation. Some Korean churches have already begun utilizing AI music for background music production and other purposes. However, a theological review of authenticity, spirituality, and the essence of praise is essential when employing AI music in the church context. Despite this necessity, domestic research and concrete proposals for practical application in this area are currently insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to theologically examine the use of AI music in the church, focusing on spirituality and spiritual experience, and to present specific methods for utilizing AI music in church settings. The study first reviews the developmental process of AI composition technology and analyzes the characteristics and limitations of AI composition tools, focusing on the prompt-based composer, Suno AI. Suno is characterized by its ability to generate complete musical pieces, including vocals, solely from text descriptions, supporting various genres and styles. The theological consideration examines the possibility of utilizing AI music based on Christian spirituality and spiritual experience. A review of research by musicologists, theologians, spiritual scholars, and music psychologists suggests that the spiritual experience is not inherent in a specific musical form itself, nor is the composer's spirituality or intention necessarily conveyed to the listener. Instead, the spiritual experience arises independently within the interaction between the music and the listener, and is ultimately dependent on the work of the Holy Spirit. Based on this theological foundation, it is argued that even if a piece of praise is created by a soulless AI, if it possesses excellent lyrics and musical quality, and the hearts and attitudes of the worshippers are sincere, it can serve as a channel for God to grant inspiration and grace. The history of contrafactum, where the church adapted secular music by changing the lyrics, also supports the acceptance of AI music. As practical proposals, five application methods are presented with actual church cases: creation of songs for worship and education, creation of songs for church events, production of background music, creation of songs for overseas missions, and production of personalized songs. This study is expected to promote discussion in the field of church music regarding AI music and provide a practical foundation for its wise and useful application in church settings.

최근 생성형 AI 작곡 기술의 비약적 발전으로 음악 창작의 방식과 주체가 변화하고 있으며, 일부 한국교회에서는 이미 배경음악 제작 등에 AI 음악을 활용하기 시작했다. 그러나 교회에서는 AI 음악 활용 시 진정성, 영성, 찬양의 본질 등에 대한 신학적 검 토가 필수적임에도, 이에 대한 국내 연구와 구체적인 활용 방안 제시는 매우 미흡한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 AI 음악을 교회에서 활용하는 것에 대해 영성과 영적 경험 에 초점을 맞추어 신학적으로 고찰하고, 교회 현장에서 AI 음악을 활용할 구체적인 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 먼저 AI 작곡 기술의 발전 과정을 살펴보고, 프롬프트 기반 작곡 AI인 수노(Suno)를 중심으로 작곡 AI의 특징과 한계를 분석했다. 수노는 텍스트 설명만으로 보컬이 포함된 완전한 형태의 음악을 생성할 수 있으며, 다양한 장르와 스타일을 지원한다는 특징이 있다. 신학적 고찰에서는 기독교 영성과 영적 경험을 중심으로 AI 음악 활용의 가능성을 검토했다. 음악학자, 신학자, 영성학자, 음악 심리학자들의 연구를 검토한 결과, 영적 경험이 특정 음악 형식 자체 에 내재한 것이 아니며, 작곡가의 영성이나 의도가 청취자에게 반드시 전달되지도 않는다고 주장한다. 대신, 영적 경험은 음악과 청취자가 만나는 순간의 상호작용 속에서 독립적으로 발생한다. 음악은 성령의 역사를 위한 매개체일 뿐이며, 하나님은 어떤 도 구든지 그분의 뜻에 따라 사용하실 수 있다. 따라서 영혼이 없는 AI가 만든 찬양이라 할지라도 가사와 곡이 훌륭하고 부르는 이의 마음과 태도가 진정하다면 충분히 영적 경험이 가능하다. 실제 연구 결과와 교회 사례들이 이를 뒷받침한다. 교회가 비종교적 음악에 가사를 바꾸어 사용해 온 콘트라팍툼(contrafactum)의 역사 역시 AI 음악 수 용의 근거가 된다. 실천적 제안으로는 예배 및 교육용 노래 제작, 교회 행사 노래 제 작, 배경음악 제작, 해외 선교용 노래 제작, 개인 맞춤형 노래 제작 등 다섯 가지 활 용 방안을 제시하고 실제 교회 사례를 소개했다. 본 연구는 AI 음악에 대한 교회음악 분야의 논의를 촉진하고, 교회 현장에서 AI 음악을 슬기롭고 유용하게 활용할 수 있는 실질적 기초를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
