Physicalism is the main stream of contemporary philosophy of mind. But there are also anti-physicalists. They refutes against physicalism as theory of mind, for it cannot explain qualia and the phenomenal aspects of mental states by means of only physicalistic terms. And Intentionality is one of the main reason of their anti-physicalistic attitude. Intentionality is the unique feature of mental states and characterized by directedness or aboutness. Intentional object is the object which mental states are about or directed at. The ontological status of Intentional object is mysterious. The object need not to exit but is not non-being. It is inexistent. Because this mysterious feature, disputations concerning intentional object are concentrated on its ontological status. But epistemological status of Intentional object should not be underestimated, for ontology is correlated with epistemology. So, the purpose of this article is to examine epistemological status of Intentional object. And, in this aricle, it is argued that there is no significant role of Intentional object in epistemology and its ontological status is overestimated. However, it is pointed out that the usefulness of Intentional object cannot be underestimated.

물리주의가 현대 심리철학의 주된 경향이라는 점은 의심할 수 없는 사실이다. 그러나 많은 철학자들이 물리주의에 반대하고 있는 것도 사실이다. 물리주의에 반대하는 철학자들은 물리주의적 용어만으로는 감각질이나 심적 상태의 현상적 측면들을 설명할 수 없다는 측면에서 물리주의를 논박한다. 그리고 물리주의를 반대하는 또 다른 주요한 이유는 물리주의가 지향성을 설명할 수 없다는 것이다. 지향성은 심적 현상에 고유한 특징으로서 정향성이나 관여함 등으로 규정된다. 지향적 대상은 심적 상태가 관여하거나 정향하고 있는 대상이다. 그리고 지향적 대상은 신비로운 존재론적 위상을 가지고 있다. 지향적 대상은 존재할 필요는 없지만 그렇다고 없는 것은 아니다. 그것은 내존한다. 지향적 대상의 이러한 신비한 존재론적 위상 때문에, 지향적 대상에 대한 논의는 주로 지향적 대상의 존재론적 위상의 문제에 집중되어 있다. 그러나 지향적 대상의 인식론적 위상에 대한 문제 역시, 존재론과 인식론이 상호 관련되기 때문에, 간과할 수 없는 문제이다. 그래서 이 논문의 목적은 지향적 대상의 인식론적 위상을 검토하는 것이다.이 논문에서는 지향적 대상이 인식론에서 어떠한 중요한 역할도 하지 않음을 주장할 것이다. 아울러 지향적 대상의 존재론적 위상 역시 과대평가 되고 있음을 주장할 것이다. 하지만 지향적 대상의 유용성을 간과할 수 없음도 지적할 것이다.
