The purpose of this study was to investigate the academic experienced of Korean Adult Lerner who are at risk of underachievement at Lifelong Education College. The present study thus aimed to explore factors related to their learning experiences that contribute to academic underachievement, as well as predictors of academic success at a university. For this aim, seven Korean college students identified as adult learners who had experienced underachievement were interviewed about their academic experiences. The interview data were analyzed using Constant Comparative Method (CCM), a qualitative research strategy. Following the CCM process, data analysis involved open coding, categorization, and validity checks. As a result, five factors associated with underachievement were identified: academic performance factors, psycho-emotional factors, role-related factors, relational and environmental factors, and college-related factors. In addition, four factors, positive thinking and determination, social support, learning strategies and skills, and career and future prospects, were identified as predictors of academic achievement. This study is meaningful in that it provides insights and practical strategies to help adult learners adapt successfully and achieve improved academic performance in Lifelong Education College.

본 연구는 대학의 평생교육 단과대학에 재학 중이면서 학습부진을 겪는 성인학습 자들을 대상으로, 그들이 대학에서 학습하면서 인식한 학습부진의 원인과 학업성취 요인을 분석하고자 하였다. 성인학습자의 학습부진은 학업지속과 대학적응을 저해하 는 중요한 요인이지만 이에 대한 국내 연구는 아직 부족한 실정이다. 이를 위해 평 생교육 단과대학에 재학하며 한 학기 이상 학습부진을 경험한 성인학습자 7명을 대 상으로 심층 인터뷰를 실시하고, 전사자료를 반복적 비교분석 방법으로 개방코딩-범 주화-범주확인의 절차를 거쳐 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 학습부진의 원인으로 학습 수 행 요인, 심리정서적 요인, 역할적 요인, 관계 및 환경적 요인, 제도적 요인 등 5개의 상위범주와 11개의 하위범주가 도출되었다. 또한 학업성취 요인으로는 개인적 동기 와 내적 의지, 사회적 지지와 관계, 학습전략과 기술, 진로와 미래 전망 등 4개의 상 위범주와 10개의 하위범주가 확인되었다. 본 연구는 성인학습자의 성공적인 대학적 응과 학업성취를 지원하기 위한 실천적 방안을 마련하는 데 이론적·실증적 근거를 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
