As of September 28, 2025, there are 4,033 registered participants in the Donghak Peasant Revolution, including 3,347 official registrations, 496 first-round, and 190 second-round registrations. In the southwestern region of Jeolla Province (Muan, Hampyeong, and Yeonggwang), 203 individuals have been identified, of whom 159 were officially registered. Most participants are recorded with the social status of “farmer,” yet figures such as Kim Eung-mun, a Confucian scholar and former government official, indicate that the simplistic classification as mere peasants requires re-evaluation. Participation extended beyond direct combat to include support and protection activities. For instance, Jeong Dong-hwa, the first officially registered female participant, sheltered her husband during the uprising and was recognized for her loyal and virtuous conduct. The study also raises the need for official registration of women listed as “Joi (召史)”, a historical term for female attendants or servants. In terms of restoring honor, the preservation of remains and historic sites has become an important issue. The remains of General Kim Eung-mun of Muan were excavated in 2022 and verified through DNA testing — the only case confirmed with descendants. Although an application for designation as a Registered National Cultural Heritage was submitted, it faced institutional limitations. Nevertheless, considering the historical and spiritual significance, re-evaluation and legal reform are needed. Several battle sites — Hwangtohyeon, Ugeumchi, Hwangnyong, Seokdae Field, and Mujang Uprising Site — have been designated as historic sites, while Gomakpo Battle Site also warrants national designation. Gradual consideration should be given to designating related heritage sites and relics, including military bases, tombs, and monuments, as national heritage. Furthermore, the “Donghak Peasant Revolution Honor Restoration Act” should be amended to introduce a system for designating and managing Donghak Peasant Revolution Heritage, encompassing not only sites but also documents, records, field remains, and facilities. Only through such integrated management can the restoration of honor for the Donghak Peasant Revolution advance meaningfully. In conclusion, while the participants of the Donghak Peasant Revolution were primarily peasants, the inclusion of Confucian scholars, women, and supporters reveals a multi-layered composition beyond simple class distinctions. The preservation of remains and battlefields, the rediscovery of female participants, and the restoration of honor emerge as essential tasks for carrying the spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution into the present day.

동학농민혁명 참여자는 2025년 9월 28일 기준 4,033명인데 직권등록이 3,347명, 1차 496명, 2차 190명이다. 전라도 서남부(무안·함평·영광)에서는 203명이 확인되었고, 이 가운데 직권등록이 159명이다. 참여자의 신분은 주로 ‘농업’으로 표기되었으나, 김응문 등 유학자·관직 경험자가 있어 단순하게 ‘농민’으로 규정하기에는 재검토가 필요하다. 참여 형태도 전투 직접 참여뿐 아니라 보호·지원까지 포함되며, 여성 참여자 정동화는 남편을 은신시키고 열행을 기려 최초로 여성 참여자로 등록이 이루어졌다. 또 ‘조이[召史]’로 기록된 여성들의 직권등록 필요성도 제기해 보았다. 명예회복 측면에서는 유해·유적의 보존에 대해 논의하였다. 무안 김응문(김창구) 장군의 유해는 2022년 발굴·DNA 검증을 거쳐 유일하게 후손과 일치함이 확인되었 으며, 국가등록문화유산 신청이 시도되었으나 제도상 한계에 부딪쳤다. 그러나 역사 적·정신사적 가치에 따라 향후 재검토가 요구되고 관련 법령의 개정이 요망된다. 전적지로는 황토현·우금치·황룡·석대들·무장기포지가 사적으로 지정되었고, 고막 포 전적지도 국가지정 필요성이 크다. 더불어 주둔지·묘소·기념비 등 관련 유적과 유물도 점진적 국가유산 지정 검토가 필요하다. 이와 함께 「동학농민명예회복법」에 ‘동학농민혁명 유산’을 지정하여 관리하는 제도를 도입해야 한다. 유적지를 포함하 여 기록이나 자료, 현장, 시설물 등도 지정하고 관리해야만 동학농민혁명 명예회복 이 한단계 앞으로 나아 갈 수 있을 것이다. 결국 동학농민혁명 참여자는 농민이 주축이지만 유학자·여성·지원자의 역할도 포함 되며, 단순 신분 구분을 넘어선 다층적 성격을 가진다. 유해와 전적지 보존, 여성 참여자 발굴, 명예회복은 동학농민혁명을 오늘에 계승하는 중요한 과제로 제시된다.
