This study aims to explore the applicability of Applied Theatre in developing youth Culture and Arts Education programs and to suggest its educational implications. Applied Theatre is a form of educational drama that emphasizes participants’ direct experiences and creative processes, encouraging active engagement and critical reflection throughout the creation process. Furthermore, it enables both participants and audiences to reflect on social issues and recognize communal values through the performance process. In this study, the researcher participated as the artistic director of the Gyeonggi Teens Theatre & Musical project in Hanam in 2024 and planned and supervised a youth arts education program based on Applied Theatre, titled Your Choice. The work Your Choice was developed through participants’ improvisations and discussions, constructing themes and scenes collaboratively. During the performance process, participants communicated with the audience by reflecting on the thematic issues and presenting possible responses. The research employed class participation observation, curriculum analysis, teaching journals, and participant satisfaction surveys to analyze the program’s educational effects from multiple perspectives. The results indicated that the participating youth experienced significant improvement in theatrical expression, development of cooperative attitudes, and a heightened sense of accomplishment through stage performance. Moreover, many participants expressed their willingness to participate in similar programs in the future and suggested directions for further improvement and sustainability. These findings confirm that Applied Theatre can be effectively utilized as a youth Culture and Arts Education methodology. This study thus proposes a practical model for youth cultural and arts education based on Applied Theatre, contributing to the search for applicable approaches in future educational contexts.

본 연구는 청소년을 대상으로 한 문화예술교육프로그램의 개발에 있어 응용연극(Applied Theatre)의 적용 가능성을 탐구하고, 그 시사점을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. Applied Theatre는 참여자들의 직접 적인 경험과 과정을 중시하는 교육연극의 방법으로, 창작과정에서 참여자들의 능동적인 참여와 비판적 인 성찰을 자연스럽게 이끈다. 또한, 공연의 과정에서 참여자와 관객이 함께 지역사회의 문제를 성찰하 고 공동체적 가치를 인식하도록 돕는다. 연구자는 2024년 <경기틴즈 연극·뮤지컬> 하남 지역의 예술감 독으로 참여하여, Applied Theatre <너의 선택은?>을 기반으로 한 청소년 문화예술교육프로그램을 기획 하고 총괄하였다. <너의 선택은?>은 참여자들의 즉흥과 토론을 기반으로 주제와 장면을 구축하였고, 공 연 과정에서 관객과 주제에 대한 성찰과 대응 방안을 제시하며 소통하였다. 연구 방법으로는 수업 참여 관찰, 교육과정 분석, 교육 일지, 참여자 만족도 조사를 통해 문화예술교육프로그램의 효과를 다각적으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 참여 청소년들은 연극적 표현력의 향상, 협력적 태도의 형성, 무대 경험을 통한 성취감의 고양을 크게 경험한 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 다수의 참여자는 이후에도 유사한 문화예술교육프 로그램의 참여 의사를 밝히며 지속성과 개선 방향을 제안하였다. 이를 통해 Applied Theatre가 청소년 문 화예술교육프로그램으로써 효과적으로 활용될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 Applied Theatre 를 활용한 청소년 문화예술교육프로그램을 제시하며, 향후 교육 현장에서 적용 가능한 방안을 모색하는 데 기여하고자 한다.
