Natural products isolated from plant resources are potential active cosmetic candidates for lightening the skin tone and skin whitening and protection against UV irradiation. In order to investigate the possibility of red flower complex(RFC) extract as a cosmetic ingredient, we measured its inhibition of NO(Nitric Oxide) production, antioxidant and anti-melanin synthesis activity. Skin lightening is described as the procedure of using natural or synthetic products to lighten the skin tone or provide an even skin complexion by reducing the amount of melanin in the skin. We examined the effect of RFC on melanin synthesis activity and found that it inhibited melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells at 600 ug/mL. From these results, RFC extract may be useful for development as an whitening ingredient in cosmetic products.
