This study explores how the formative principles and symbolism of traditional painting and dancheong (traditional decorative painting on architecture) can be reconstructed within the context of contemporary media art and design. To this end, four analytical criteria—visual elements, media and spatial implementation, experiential dimension, and semantic interpretation—were derived and applied to five selected cases published in domestic academic journals. The analysis revealed that traditional painting and dancheong, while rooted in different mediums, commonly emphasize visual elements such as color, pattern, composition, and spatial voids. When combined with digital technologies, these elements can be transformed into modern creative resources that enable immersive experiences and semantic recontextualization. In particular, the formative aesthetics of tradition were found to be expandable through diverse methods such as projection mapping, super-graphics, 3D virtual spaces, motion graphics, and immersive media installations, thereby functioning as strategic resources that generate new sensory experiences and cultural identities beyond mere reproduction. Based on these findings, this study proposes four design patterns (Symbol Trigger, White Pause, Hierarchy to Flow, and Sacred to Play) to conceptualize the contemporary application of traditional painting and dancheong. These patterns demonstrate that traditional arts can be systematized as a modern expressive language rather than preserved solely as heritage, offering both academic and practical significance. Nevertheless, the study has limitations in that the analysis was restricted to a small number of domestic cases and did not sufficiently reflect overseas research or explore the integration of advanced digital technologies. Future research should address these limitations by expanding case studies, incorporating international comparisons, and cutting-edge media technologies to highlight the unique value of traditional painting and dancheong in a global context.

본 연구는 전통 회화와 단청이 지닌 조형성과 상징성이 현대 미디어아트 및 디자인 맥락에서 어떻게 재구성될 수 있는지를 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 시각적 요소, 매체 및 공간 구현, 경험 차원, 의미적 해석의 네 가지 분석 기준을 도출하고, 국내 학술 논문에 수록된 다섯 편의 사례에 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 전통 회화와 단청은 색채, 문양, 구도, 여백과 같은 시각적 요소를 핵심으로 하여, 디지털 기술과 결합할 때 몰입적 체험과 의미적 재맥락화를 통해 현대적 창작 자원으로 전환될 수 있음을 확 인하였다. 특히 전통의 조형성은 프로젝션 맵핑, 슈퍼그래픽, 3D 가상공간, 모션 그래픽, 실감 미디어 설치 등 다양한 방식으 로 확장되며, 단순 재현을 넘어 새로운 감각적 경험과 문화 정체성을 창출하는 전략적 자원으로 작동하였다. 이를 종합하여 본 연구는 전통 회화와 단청의 현대적 활용을 설명하는 네 가지 디자인 패턴(Symbol Trigger, White Pause, Hierarchy to Flow, Sacred to Play)을 제안하였다. 이러한 패턴은 전통예술을 단순한 보존 대상이 아닌 현대적 표현 언어로 체계화했다는 점에서 학문적, 실무적 의의가 있다. 다만 분석 대상 사례가 제한적이며, 해외 연구 및 첨단 디지털 기술과의 접목 가능성을 충분히 반영하지 못했다는 한계가 있다. 향후 연구에서는 다양한 사례 확충과 국제적 비교를 통해 전통 회화와 단청의 독창성 을 풍부하게 조명하고, 글로벌 맥락에서 그 의미를 확장할 필요가 있다.
