This study aims to demonstrate that 'real time,' the dominant temporality of the contemporary media environment, is not a natural outcome of technological progress but a 'political construct' historically shaped by the specific socio-political demands of each era. Adopting media archaeology as its core methodology and Paul Virilio's dromology as its primary analytical lens, this research traces the genealogy of 'real time' and analyzes the politics of time inherent within it. The archaeological analysis reveals that 'real time' has been progressively radicalized through four stages: from the 'quasi-real time' invented by the telegraph's conquest of space in the 19th century; to the mass 'simultaneity' constructed by broadcast media in the 20th century; to the accelerated and individualized 'nowness' of network media in the 21st century; and finallyto the 'instantaneous generation' actualized by AI apparatuses. This history of acceleration, as Virilio foresaw, leads to a 'crisis of perception' by eliminating the time for critical reflection and collapsing the sense of reality. In conclusion, this paper argues that the dominance of 'real time' is a political issue that threatens our subjectivity beyond mere technological convenience. It warns against the risk of alternative practices being co-opted by the logic of late capitalism and, moving beyond simply engaging with 'slow media,' suggests the necessity of critical and subjective temporal practices such as 'digital disconnection.'
