At the unpredictable charge of Protectorate system, Jang Jiyeon attempted to transmit public opinion to uneducated people lacks literary Sinitic knowledge beyond the established readers of Hwangseong Newspaper. In This Day We Wail Aloud, his efforts represented through hybrid syntax and notation system. Mainly based upon a despotic monarchy, the message of it could not be impressive to readers of nowadays Korea but the writing styles of it is more decisive factor to demonstrate his efforts to broaden readers for confronting colonial crisis. Comparing it with his other editorials in Hwangseong Newspaper, only it has hybrid syntax between Korean and literary Sinitic. In this paper, I also discuss his another articles, the Whole Story of Five Pacts’ Signing and the Travelogue to Japan to understand his cognition towards Japan and Protectorate System. This Day We Wail Aloud‘s exceptional writing styles are hard to find in his editorials in Daehan Jaganghoe Monthly in the Protectorate. However his efforts to broaden readers and enhancing Korean in writing in press media are succeeded to his diverse books such as Lady’s Reader, Manguk-samul-giwon-Yeoksa(萬國事物紀原歷史) and the Story of Mrs. Patriot.

예측하지 못했던 보호국 체제라는 사변이 닥쳐왔을 때, 장지연은 기존 황성신문의 독자층을 넘어 한문 지식이 부족한 계층에게도 적극적으로 공론을 전파했다. 그 결과가 ｢시일야방성대곡｣에 나타난 문법과 표기의 파격이다. 전제군주제의 질서에 근거한 ｢방성대곡｣의 메시지는 지금의 우리에게 그저 심상한 것일 수도 있다. 메시지보다 더 평가해야 할 것은 독자층의 확대를 위해 한글의 비중을 확대하고 문법을 뒤섞은 새로운 글쓰기 방식이다. 이 논문은 ｢방성대곡｣과 황성신문의 다른 논설을 비교해 그 차이점을 제시하고 장지연이 식민지 위기에 대응하기 위해 글쓰기를 어떻게 바꾸었는지 논했다. 그리고 ｢오건조약청체전말｣과 ｢동유문견｣도 분석해 장지연의 일본에 대한 인식도 분석했다. ｢방성대곡｣의 예외적 문체는 보호국 체제에서 장지연이 집중했던 『월보』 등의 논설에서 다시 찾기 어려웠지만 독자층을 확대하고 글쓰기에서 국문의 비중을 확대하자는 인식은 해조신문, 『여자독본』, 『만국사물기원역사』, 『애국부인전』 등의 다양한 매체와 문체의 시도로 이어졌다.
