This study explores the use of Mugunghwa hedges in the living spaces of the Joseon Dynasty through historical records, aiming to demonstrate the relationship between the people of the time and Mugunghwa, and to examine its significance. Documentary evidence confirms that Mugunghwa was consistently employed as a hedge throughout the Joseon period, with traces dating back to the late Goryeo. Its biological characteristics made it well-suited for hedge functions, contributing to its widespread adoption in residential spaces. By the 15th and 16th centuries, Mugunghwa hedges had already been established not only in central and southern Korea but also in northern regions such as Pyeonganbuk-do. Records indicate its presence in rural, mountainous, riverside, coastal, and central settlements, demonstrating its use across diverse environments regardless of village type. Housing forms suggest that Mugunghwa hedges were primarily associated with commoners’ residences. In addition, the agricultural manuals of the period introduced Mugunghwa as a variety of hedge plant, while literary accounts depict it in mental landscapes or as part of the idealized house of a lifetime’s dream. These sources attest to Mugunghwa hedges as a representative feature of housing in Joseon. Positive perceptions of the plant are evident from early Joseon, and by the early 19th century it had come to symbolize the Korean countryside. Therefore, over time, Mugunghwa hedges became established not only as a component of traditional life but also as a symbolic marker of the domains surrounding family and village communities. In sum, Mugunghwa hedges have coexisted with the living spaces of ancestors for over five centuries, playing a key role in sustaining the enduring bond between Mugunghwa and the Korean people.

본고의 연구 목적은 조선시대 선조의 생활 공간에 공존했던 무궁화 울타리의 활 용 양상을 옛 문헌 기록을 통해 파악하고 당대 선조와 무궁화 간 관계와 그 의미를 탐구하는 데 있다. 무궁화 울타리가 언급된 당대 문헌 기록을 통해 드러나거나 확 인된 사실은 다음과 같다. ① 조선시대 기간 내내 무궁화를 산울타리로 활용한 문헌 기록이 확인되며, 고 려 말에도 무궁화가 울타리로 쓰인 흔적이 남아 있다. ② 무궁화의 생물학적 특성 이 산울타리 기능과 부합해 조선시대 산울타리 수목으로 널리 활용되었다고 판단 하였다. ③ 15∼16세기에 이미 무궁화가 한반도 중남부 지역은 물론, 북부 지역 인 평안북도에서도 울타리로 활용되었음이 특정된다. ④ 무궁화 울타리 조성 지역 이 농촌, 산촌, 강변(해변), 지역 중심지로 나타나 마을의 성격과 무관하게 활용 되었음을 알 수 있었다. ⑤ 무궁화 울타리가 조성된 가옥의 형태를 통해 일반 백성 의 주거 공간에 주로 조성된 것으로 판단하였다. ⑥ 이 외에도 당대 농업서에서 산울타리 조성 방법 사례로 무궁화를 소개한 점, 무궁화 울타리를 심상으로 떠올 린 기록들이나 평생 꿈꾸던 집에 등장하는 울타리 모습 기록 등을 살펴보았을 때 무궁화 울타리를 조선시대 주거의 한 전형으로 판단하였다. ⑦ 조선 전기에 이미 울타리 형태로 선조들 삶 속에서 어우러져 뿌리 내린 무궁화에 대한 긍정적 인식 이 드러나고 19세기 초에는 무궁화가 우리 촌가를 상징하는 대표 매개물로 인식된 정황도 나타난다. 이렇듯 이어진 시간 속에서 울타리로 활용된 무궁화가 전통 적 생활의 일부이자 가족과 마을 공동체를 둘러싼 영역의 표상으로 자리매김했을 것으로 추정하였다. 이상과 같이, 조선시대에 무궁화가 산울타리로 널리 활용됨으로써 우리 선조의 생활 공간에서 500년 넘는 기간에 걸쳐 공존하며 우리 민족과의 관계를 형성하고 이어온 것을 확인하였다. 이로써 무궁화가 우리 민족과 유구한 시간 동안 관계를 이어오는 데 울타리로써의 활용이 중요한 역할을 한 것으로 판단하였다.
