In recent years, vigilantism has been rapidly gaining public support in South Korea. This phenomenon reflects both growing distrust in the criminal justice system and a societal demand for alternative forms of justice. Yet, despite the potential threats that vigilantism poses to the rule of law, there remains a lack of empirical analysis on the standards and rationales by which the public either legitimizes or criticizes vigilantism. This study applies text mining techniques (frequency analysis, LDA topic modeling) to analyze 9,577 YouTube comments posted on the 10 most-viewed videos of a content creator who targets illegal filming offenders. The findings reveal that commenters express strong distrust toward criminal justice institutions, while simultaneously recognizing the YouTuber as a legitimate actor in the pursuit of justice and supporting his activities. However, support for vigilantism is not uniform, rather, it is shaped by a complex interplay of factors, including institutional distrust, the perceived sincerity and motivations of the vigilante, and situational context. This study demonstrates that perceptions of vigilantism are not consistently supportive or oppositional but are instead multilayered and context-dependent.

최근 한국 사회에서는 사적 제재가 높은 지지를 받으며 빠르게 확산되고 있다. 이러한 현상은 형사사법체 계에 대한 불신과 대안적 정의 실현에 대한 사회적 열망을 반영한다. 그러나 사적 제재가 법치주의를 위협할 수 있는 잠재적 위험을 지니고 있음에도 대중이 이를 어떤 근거와 논리에 따라 수용하거나 비판하는 지에 대한 실증적 분석은 여전히 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 불법촬영 제재를 주요 콘텐츠로 다루는 유튜버 ‘감빵인도자’의 영상 중 조회수 기준 상위 10개 영상에 작성된 댓글 9,577개를 텍스트 마이닝 기법(빈도 분석, LDA 토픽 모델링)으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 댓글 작성자들은 형사사법기관에 대해서는 불신을 드러내는 반면 유튜버를 정의 실현의 주체로 인식하며 이들의 사적 제재를 지지하는 경향을 보였다. 사적 제재의 정당성은 제도에 대한 불신, 제재 주체의 동기와 진정성 등 다양한 기준에 따라 복합적으로 구성되었 다. 본 연구는 사적 제재에 대한 인식이 이를 일관적으로 찬성 또는 반대하는 것이 아니라 다층적이고 맥락 의존적인 양상으로 형성되어 있음을 보여준다.
