Del Ol is arguably the epitome of Mongolia's Gobi petroglyphs. Evenly reflecting the diverse expressive qualities of animal depictions throughout the Gobi, I counted more than a dozen representations of wagons at Del Ol. The depiction of wagons with no one in them, unlike the usual depictions of the Mongolia Plateau and North Central Asia in general, suggests another function. The author myself categorizes it as a way of representing funerary rites in the Mongolian Gobi region, where the wagon appeared as a hearse. The Del Ol petroglyph complex, then, was more than just an artifact; it also served as a nother s acred g round, a buria l ground for a s ky buria l.

델 올은 몽골 고비 암각화의 전형이라 할 만한 곳이다. 고비 일대 동물 묘사의 다양한 표현 속 성을 고르게 반영하고 있는 델 올에서 필자는 10여 점 이상의 많은 마차표현을 조사하였다. 델 올에서 마차는 그동안의 조사에서 보았던 몽골고원의 그것은 물론, 중앙아시아 북아시아의 통상적인 것과는 다르게, 아무도 타지 않은 마차를 묘사하는 것으로 또 다른 기능성을 암시하고 있다. 그것을 글쓴이는 몽골 고비 지역의 장의 표현의 한 방식, 즉 마차가 사자를 옮기기 위한 운 구(運柩)로써 그렇게 표현되었던 것으로 분류하였다. 그렇다면 델 올이라고 하는 암각화 단지는 단순한 유적으로서 의미를 넘어, 또 다른 성역의 공 간으로서 자연장(風葬)의 장지로서 역할을 또한 감당하고 있었던 것이었다.
