The purpose of this study is to analyze the meaning of learning for oneself(爲己之學) contained in 『Yijasueo(李子粹語)』 compiled by Seongho Yi Ik's(星湖 李瀷) thereby clarifying the fundamental questions of education, ‘What is the purpose of learning to live as a truly human person and to live a truly human life?’, and ‘How can one cultivate the practical attitude to live steadfastly according to one's purpose?’. 『Yijasueo』 Part 2, ｢For Oneself｣, contains the core philosophy of learning for oneself, which emphasizes the intrinsic worthwhileness of education. The learning for oneself that Seongho spoke of refers to an attitude of living autonomously, where one becomes the subject of one's own learning without relying on external evaluation. To live such an autonomous life, one must establish a righteous purpose and, guided by that purpose, perfect one's character to ultimately realize one's true self. This study derived four educational implications from the learning for oneself philosophy of 『Yijasueo』 from the perspective of modern education. First, emphasizing ‘Firm resolve’ as the starting point of education forms the basis of self-directed learning. Second, the formation of a moral character emphasizes the importance of character education. Third, immersion education for self-realization presents a direction for exploring and realizing the meaning of one's existence. Fourth, the integrated practice of study and life requires an educational transition from theory-centered to practice-centered, and from knowledge-centered to experience-centered.

본 연구는 성호 이익(星湖 李瀷, 1681∼1763)의 『이자수어(李子粹語)』에 담긴 위기지학(爲己之學)의 의미 를 분석함으로써 교육의 근본적인 물음, 즉 ‘사람다운 사람, 삶다운 삶을 살아가기 위한 공부의 목적은 무엇인가?’, ‘부화뇌동(附和雷同)하지 않고 목적한 바대로 살아가기 위한 실천적 태도는 어떻게 길러야 하는가?’를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 『이자수어』 제2편 ｢위학｣에는 교육의 내재적 가치를 강조하는 위기지학의 핵심 사상이 담겨있다. 성호가 말한 위기지학적 삶이란 외부의 평가에 의존하지 않고 자기 자신이 학문의 주체가 되어 자율적으로 삶을 영 위하는 태도를 의미한다. 이러한 자율적인 삶을 살아가기 위해서는 반드시 올바른 뜻을 세우고, 그 뜻이 이끄는 정당한 방향에 따라 인격을 완성함으로써 궁극적으로 자기다움을 실현해야 한다. 본 연구는 현대 교육의 관점에서 『이자수어』의 위기지학 사상을 통해 네 가지 교육적 의의를 도출하였다. 첫째, 교육의 출발점으로서 ‘입지’의 강조 는 자기주도적 학습의 기반을 형성한다. 둘째, 도덕적 인격 함양은 인성교육의 중요성을 부각시킨다. 셋째, 자기실 현을 위한 몰입교육은 자기 존재의 의미를 탐색하고 실현하는 방향성을 제시한다. 넷째, 학문과 삶의 통합적 실천 은 이론중심에서 실천중심으로, 지식 중심에서 경험 중심으로의 교육적 전환이 요구된다.
