This study compares the pragmatic functions of workplace address terms in Korean and Vietnamese societies, based on discourses from the Korean drama “Misaeng” and the Vietnamese drama “Cô gái xấu xí”. Address terms were classified into “normative use” and “strategic use.” Normative use reflected each society’s approach to uncertainty management. In Korean society, job-title-based terms minimized ambiguity within a hierarchy shaped by high uncertainty avoidance, while in Vietnamese society, kinship-based terms fostered relational flexibility under a “society-as-family” culture. Strategic use revealed different cultural logics. In Korean discourses, strategies adjusted power and solidarity within rigid organizational systems, whereas in Vietnamese discourses, strategies redefined already flexible relationships. The lower frequency of strategic use in Vietnam indicates an emphasis on harmony and the absence of strict rules. These findings suggest that Korean language education for Vietnamese learners should adopt a context-based approach grounded in cultural understanding, rather than direct translation.

본 연구는 직장에서 한국어와 베트남어 호칭어의 화용적 기능을 비교･분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 한국 드라마 ｢미생｣과 베트남 드라마 ｢못생긴 여자(Cô gái xấu xí)｣의 담화에 나타난 호칭어 사용을 분 석하여 ‘일반적 사용’과 ‘전략적 사용’으로 범주화하였다. 분석 결과, '일 반적 사용'은 각 사회의 불확실성 관리 방식과 밀접한 관련이 있었다. 한 국어는 높은 불확실성 회피 성향과 조직 중심의 위계 문화를 바탕으로 직함 중심 호칭어를 사용하여 모호성을 제거하였다. 반면 베트남어는 낮은 불확실성 회피 성향과 가족 중심적 사회관의 영향을 받아 관계의 유연성 을 강조하는 친족 호칭어를 보편적으로 사용하였다. 한편, 전략적 사용 역시 각 문화의 특성을 반영하였다. 한국어 담화에서는 엄격한 조직 체 계 내에서 권력과 연대감을 조정하는 전략이 주로 나타났으며, 베트남어 담화에서는 이미 유연한 관계를 재정의하는 전략이 나타났다. 베트남어 에서 전략적 사용 빈도가 낮은 것은 조화 중시와 엄격한 규칙의 부재를 시사한다. 이러한 결과는 두 언어가 표면적으로 유사한 문화적 가치를 공유하더라도 근본적인 작동 원리에서 차이가 있음을 보여주며, 베트남 인 학습자를 위한 호칭어 교육은 직역에 의존하기보다 문화적 이해에 기 반한 맥락 중심 접근이 필요함을 확인할 수 있었다.
