This study examined the effectiveness of Gemini Live, a natively multimodal AI system, in beginner-level Korean speaking education, with a focus on speaking ability and anxiety. In a four-week quasi-experiment, the experimental group engaged in self-directed role-play with Gemini Live, while the control group did not. Post-test results showed that the experimental group achieved significantly greater fluency and lower speaking anxiety than the control group, although no significant difference was observed in accuracy. In-depth interviews revealed that learners perceived Gemini Live as a “conversation partner providing psychological safety,” which enhanced their confidence and fluency. Participants also emphasized the need for corrective feedback, consistent with the quantitative findings on accuracy. Overall, the results suggest that Gemini Live is an effective supplementary tool for improving fluency and reducing speaking anxiety, but targeted pedagogical designs—such as prompts for corrective feedback—are necessary to improve accuracy. This study provides practical implications for the integration of natively multimodal AI in Korean language education.

본 연구는 멀티모달 기반 AI 시스템인 Gemini Live의 효과성을 초급 수 준 한국어 말하기 교육에 적용하여, 말하기 능력과 불안 요인을 중심으 로 살펴보았다. 4주간의 준실험에서 실험집단은 Gemini Live를 활용한 자기주도적 역할극 활동에 참여하였고 통제집단은 그러한 활동을 하지 않았다. 사후 검사 결과, 실험집단은 통제집단에 비해 말하기 유창성이 유의미하게 향상되고 말하기 불안이 낮아졌으나 정확성에서는 두 집단 간 유의미한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 심층 면담에서는 학습자들이 Gemini Live를 ‘심리적 안전감을 제공하는 대화 파트너’로 인식하여 자 신감과 유창성을 높였다고 보고하였다. 동시에 학습자들은 오류 교정 피 드백의 필요성을 강조하였으며 이는 정확성 측정 결과와도 일치하였다. 따라서 Gemini Live는 유창성 향상과 말하기 불안 감소에 효과적인 보조 도구임을 보여주지만 정확성을 높이기 위해서는 교정 피드백 유도와 같 은 목표 지향적 교수 설계가 필요함을 시사한다. 본 연구는 다중모달 기 반 AI의 한국어 교육 통합에 대한 실질적 시사점을 제공한다.
