In Korea, the qin (琴, geum) is often mistakenly translated as geomungo (玄琴), leading to a lack of accurate understanding of the instrument’s distinct identity. However, since ancient times, the qin has been revered by the literati as a symbol of profound spiritual and philosophical value, transcending its function as a mere musical instrument. Despite this, studies delving into the meaning and spirit of the qin are scarce. This study examined 101 qin-related poems from Mok-eun Yi Saek’s (牧隱 李穡) Mok-eun Sigo (牧隱詩藁) to explore the meaning of the qin and its spiritual orientations. A keyword analysis method was applied to effectively analyze this extensive body of work. The findings revealed a variety of spiritual aspirations within Yi Saek’s qin poems: ”goi” (古意), which denotes a yearning for communion with ancient sages; “shun-qin” (舜琴), which symbolizes ideal governance and harmony; “boya-qin’”(伯牙琴), which highlights the unique friendship of a “zhiyin” (知音) or “soulmate;” “wuxian-qin” (無絃琴), which represents a pastoral detachment from worldly affairs; “qinshu’” (琴 書), which symbolizes the scholarly integrity and self-sufficiency of a literatus; and “tan-qin” (彈琴), which signifies the pursuit of aesthetic refinement and “fengliu” (風流). By systematically categorizing these aspects of the qin’s spirit, this research aims to shed new light on its symbolic status and poetic significance in Korean Sinology. Furthermore, it seeks to establish a foundational basis for further academic discourse on the philosophical implications of qin in East Asian intellectual traditions.

국내에서 금(琴)은 흔히 거문고로 번역되어 악기 자체에 대한 정확한 이해가 부 족한 실정이다. 그러나 금은 예로부터 문인들에 의해 예찬되었으며, 단순한 악기를 넘어선 정신적․사상적 가치를 지닌 것으로 인식되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 금의 의미와 정신을 심층적으로 고찰한 연구는 드물다. 본 연구는 목은 이색(牧隱 李穡)의 『목은시고(牧隱詩藁)』에 수록된 금 관련 시 101편을 대상으로 금의 의미를 개괄하고, 그 정신적 지향을 규명하고자 했다. 방대 한 시를 효과적으로 분석하기 위해 키워드 분석 방법을 적용하였으며, 그 결과 이 색의 금시(琴詩)에는 성현과의 교감을 지향하는 ‘고의(古意)’, 이상 정치와 조화를 상징하는 ‘순금(舜琴)’, 지음(知音)의 우정을 강조하는 ‘백아금(伯牙琴)’, 전원적 탈 속을 드러내는 ‘무현금(無絃琴)’, 문인의 학문적 자세와 자족을 상징하는 ‘금서(琴書)’, 풍류와 미학을 추구하는 ‘탄금(彈琴)’ 등 다양한 정신적 지향이 드러났다. 본 연구는 이러한 금의 정신을 구체적 명칭으로 체계화하여 한국 한문학 속 금 의 상징적 위상과 시학적 함의를 새롭게 조명하고, 더 나아가 금의 사상적 의미에 대한 학문적 논의의 기반을 확충하고자 한다.
