In recent years, reading has evolved beyond a private, introspective activity conducted in solitude, becoming a shared and communal experience enjoyed with others. Reflecting this shift, reading-related policies have increasingly focused on promoting social reading through the support of reading communities, the creation of book-friendly environments in daily life, and the establishment of a participatory reading culture. In this context, identifying and analyzing various practices of social reading can contribute to the broader effort to spread a culture of reading. This study focuses on a specific form of shared bookshelf in Japan, known as the “Machi Library,” which combines reading groups with the sharing of facilities and book collections. The research aims to examine this new form of social reading and draw implications. The “Machi Library”, as studied here, is a shared bookshelf based on the traditional functions of a library, designed to facilitate social reading. To this end, this study analyzed the participants in the operation of the March Library according to the five types, and the results showed that the March Library can be operated very flexibly and openly. It was suggested that the March Library has confirmed the possibility of becoming an environmental element that builds a point of contact for reading. And in order to expand reading contact points through the March Library in Korea, it was suggested that a support system be established to enable experience sharing and systematic research.

최근 독서는 혼자만의 공간에서 은밀하게 이루어진 내면적인 행위를 넘어 타인과 공유하고 함께 즐기는 행위로 확대되고 있다. 이러한 현상을 반영하여 독서 관련 정책에서도 독서공동체 확산의 지원, 일상에서 책 읽는 환경 조성, 함께 만드는 독서 문화 정착을 통해 사회적 독서를 활성화하고자 하고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 사회적 독서를 위한 다양한 실천 사례를 발굴하고 분석하는 것은 독서 문화를 확산시키는 노력의 일환이 될 수 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 독서 모임과 시설 및 장서의 공유를 결합한 일본의 공유 서가의 한 형태인 ‘마치라이브러리’에 주목하여 사회적 독서의 새로운 형태를 살펴보고 국내 적용을 위한 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 공 유 서가의 5가지 유형에 따라 마치라이브러리의 운영 사례를 분석하였고, 그 결과 마치라이브러리는 공동체 형성을 근간으로 하되, 개방적이고 매우 유연하게 운영되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이에 마치라이브러리는 독서의 접점을 구축하는 환경적인 요소가 될 수 있는 가능성을 확인하였으며, 국내에서 마치라이브러리를 통해 독서 접점을 확장시 키기 위해서는 체계적인 연구와 경험을 공유할 수 있는 지원 시스템의 구축이 요구됨을 제안하였다.
