This study examines the transformation of perception of fatherhood in the Franciscan Order in the early 13th century, focusing on Thomas de Celano’s two hagiographies of St. Francis – Vita Prima and Vita Secunda, Bonaventure’s Legenda Maior , and Salimbene di Adam’s Chronicle. These sources demonstrate a common pattern that early Franciscan friars declared the severance of relationships with their fathers and put on emphasis on new spiritual father-son relationships. In particular, the conflict between Francis and his father Pietro, which was simply mentioned in Vita Prima , was descibed more dramatically in Vita Secunda and Legenda Maior, emphasising on Francis’s rejection of biological fatherhood and acceptance of new spiritual fatherhood. These changes are connected to crises faced by the early Franciscan order: conflicts over the understanding on ‘poverty after the death of Francis, tensions betweem clerical and lay friars, and concerns that some friars might leave the order when their biological families appealed to them, as Salimbene noted. Through this analysis, this study argues that the early Franciscan order’s emphasis on spiritual father-son relationships was influenced by not only Christian traditions but also internal conflicts of the early Franciscan order and their efforts for overcome them.

본 연구는 13세기 초기 프란치스코회에서 나타난 부성 인식의 변화를 토마스 첼라노의 두 프란치스코 성인전과 보나벤투라의 『대전기』, 살림베네 디 아담의 『연대기』를 중심으로 분석하였다. 이들 자료에서는 초기 프란치스코회 수도사들 이 생물학적 친부와의 관계 단절을 선언하고 새로운 영적 아버지-아들 관계를 적극적으로 강조했다는 공통점이 나타난다. 특히 토마스 첼라노의 『제1 생애』 에서 단순하게 언급된 프란치스코와 그의 아버지 피에트로와의 갈등은 『제 2생 애』와 보나벤투라의 『대전기』에서 프란치스코의 생물학적 부성 거부와 새로운 영적 부성의 수용을 강조하면서 더욱 극적으로 묘사되었다. 이러한 저술 상의 변화는 초기 프란치스코회가 직면한 여러 위기와 밀접한 관련이 있다. 프란치스 코 사후 ‘가난’에 대한 이해를 둘러싼 갈등, 성직 수도사와 비성직 수도사 사이 의 긴장, 그리고 살림베네의 경험에서처럼 공동체 구성원들이 생물학적 가족의 호소로 인해 수도회를 떠날 것에 대한 우려 등이 복합적으로 작용한 것으로 보 인다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 초기 프란치스코회의 영적 부자 관계 강조가 고대 후기부터 이어진 그리스도교 전통의 영향을 받았으면서도, 동시에 13세기 중반 프란치스코회의 내부 갈등을 극복하고 공동체의 통합을 유지하기 위한 하나의 방향성이었음을 보였다.
