Despite the critical role teacher educators play in teacher education, research on teacher educators in South Korea has remained significantly limited. In response to this gap, this study systematically analyzes international research trends by examining 104 research articles on teacher educators published in the leading international journal Teaching and Teacher Education (TTE) from 1985 to 2024. Using four analytical criteria—research subjects, topics, geographical distribution, and research methods—this study employed both frequency and content analysis to identify key characteristics and patterns. The findings reveal that while the majority of studies focus on university-based teacher educators, other types such as prospective teacher educators (e.g., doctoral students) and school-based teacher educators were also included in some cases. Additionally, a notable number of studies addressed the interactions between different groups, such as comparisons among various types of teacher educators and between teacher educators and preservice teachers. Five major research themes were identified: (1) formation and development of teacher educators, (2) teaching practices, (3) research engagement, (4) educational policy and reform, and (5) research trend analyses. Among these, the first two themes accounted for the largest share of the research. Although qualitative methods dominated (63.4%), the studies exhibited methodological diversity—including self-studies, case studies, and action research—differentiating them from the predominantly self-study-driven approaches in domestic research. In terms of regional distribution, North America, Europe, and Asia showed the most active research engagement, with varying thematic emphases shaped by local educational systems and cultural contexts. By mapping the international research landscape, this study provides valuable insights for broadening and revitalizing teacher educator research in the Korean context.

교사교육에서 핵심적 역할을 담당하는 교사교육자에 관한 연구가 국내에서는 매우 제한적으로 수행되어 왔다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 본 연구는 교사교육 분야에서 가장 영향력 있는 국제학술지인 ‘Teaching and Teacher Education(TTE)’에 1985년부터 2024년까지 게재된 교사교육자 관련 논문 104편을 분석하여, 해외 교사교육자 연구 동향을 체계적으로 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 연구 대상, 연구 주제, 수행 지역, 연구 방법이라는 네 가지 분석 준거를 바탕으로, 빈도분석과 내용분석 방법을 활용하여 연구 동향의 특징을 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 연구 대상은 대학 기반 교사교육자에 집중되는 경향이 있으나, 예비 교사교육자, 학교 기반 교사교육자 등과 같은 다양한 유형의 교사교육자에 관한 연구도 이루어져 왔음을 확인하였다. 연구 주제의 경우 총 5가지의 대주제와 14개의 중주제, 74개의 소주제가 도출되었으며, 대주제 영역 중 ‘교사교육자의 형성과 성장’과 ‘교수활동과 실천’ 관련 연구가 가장 활발하게 수행되었다. 연구방법 측면에서는 질적연구가 63.4%로 가장 큰 비중을 차지하였으나 자기연구, 사례연구, 실행연구 등 다양한 분석 방법이 활용되고 있어 자기연구 중심의 국내 교사교육자 연구 동향과 차별성을 보였다. 연구수행 지역별 특성으로는 북미, 유럽, 아시아 순으로 연구가 활발하였으며, 각 지역의 교육제도와 문화적 맥락에 따라 주제의 중점이 상이하게 나타났다. 이러한 분석 결과를 바탕으로 국내 교사교육자 연구의 활성화와 다각화에 필요한 시사점을 제시하였다.
