Focusing on Seo Yi-je’s novels “Towards 0%” this paper aims to examine the selfloathing mechanism that operates through shame and self-destruction, and the movement of a new youth subject that leads to aspiration for existence through an immaterial way of existence with discarded substances to overcome it. The youth subject’s way of thinking, appearing in full force Seo Yi-je’s novels and forms the main narrative, has been through the process of undermining youth in Korean society’s youth discourse, which is actually a structural problem based on neoliberal economic values, not just generational or cultural differences. Therefore, the mechanism of self-loathing, refracted by shame and self-abuse, operates inside the marginalized youth subject. However, this self-loathing does not remain as a catastrophic end point. The young subject’s self-exploration attempts to move toward a new existence through nonlinear contact with substances discarded by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It can be said that it is a movement to secure newly born youth identity through the connection between non-human or material, and the fate-disposal of matter continues with human existence-disposal. This can be said to be a literary attempt to think about the possibility of a new subject in the instability and crack without reducing the situation of a young subject who repeats frustration and wandering to a deficient existence. Therefore, the narrative of the young subject shown in “Towards 0%” can be understood as a place where the bond of self-loathing and the planning of ontological transformation beyond it work at the same time, providing an important opportunity to expand the meaning horizon of contemporary youth literature.

본고는 서이제 소설집 『0%를 향하여』를 중심으로 청년 주체 내부의 발화 양식에 주목하여 수치와 자학으로 작동되는 자기혐오 메커니즘과 이를 극복하고자 폐기된 물질과의 비물질적인 존재방식을 통해 실존에의 열망으로 이어지는 새로운 청년 주체의 움직임을 살펴보고자 한다. 서이제 소설에 전면적으로 등장하며 주된 서사를 이루고 있는 청년 주체의 사유방식은 한국 사회가 호명하고 생산해낸 청년 담론이 실질적으로 청춘 훼손 과정을 거쳐 이어져 왔으며 이는 단순한 세대나 문화 차이가 아닌 신자유주의적 경제 가치에 입각한 구조적 문제라는 사실을 담보하고 있다. 이에 소외되고 탈각된 청년 주체의 내면에는 수치와 자학으로 굴절된 자기혐오의 메커니즘이 작동한다. 그러나 이러한 자기혐오는 파국적 종착점으로만 머물지 않는다. 청년 주체의 자기 탐구는 4차산업혁명으로 폐기된 물질들과의 비선형적 접촉을 통해 새로운 존재에의 탐구로 나아가고자 한다. 물질의 운명-폐기가 인간 존재-폐기와 이어지며, 비인간 또는 물질과의 연결로 새롭게 탄생한 청년 주체성을 확보하고자 하는 움직임이라 할 수 있겠다. 이는 좌절과 방황을 반복하는 청년 주체의 상황을 결핍적 존재로 환원하지 않고 그 불안정성과 균열 속에서 새로운 주체에의 가능성을 사유하는 문학적 시도라 할 수 있다. 따라서 『0%를 향하여』가 보여주는 청년 주체의 서사는 자기혐오의 굴레와 그것을 넘어서는 존재론적 전환의 기획이 동시에 작동하는 장으로 이해될 수 있으며, 이는 동시대 청년문학의 의미 지평을 확장하는 중요한 계기를 제공한다.
