This article examines Han Kang’s novel We Do Not Part by analyzing the actions of its characters as practices of “political care,” thereby investigating how the collective memory of the Jeju 4?3 Uprising is rearticulated through literature. The notion of “political care” extends beyond an individual’s ethical response to another’s suffering, encompassing social responsibility, historical solidarity, and the political capacities of democratic life. Within the novel, Jung-sim is portrayed not merely as a victim of massacre but as an agent of political care who tends to unacknowledged wounds of history and restores the dignity of the dead. Her acts of care take shape as forms of speech that resist enforced silence, transforming private grief into political practice. Kyung-ha and In-sun, as members of the postmemory generation, emerge not as neutral observers but as embodied participants in memory who enter into Jung-sim’s pain and form a ‘democratic camp of care.’ Through the practice of listening with their whole bodies, they confront the difficulty of representation and tend to the long-suppressed memory of 4?3 with multiple senses, enabling Jung-sim’s acts of care to be narrated within the realm of public memory. Ultimately, the novel illuminates care as both a public responsibility and a shared social resource, demonstrating that in the absence of state cooperation or institutional support, individual acts of care can sustain a politics of memory and solidarity. At the same time, it emphasizes the continuing necessity of collective journeys toward truths that remain unrevealed.
