The aesthetic concept of "The Plum-and-Moon Motif" permeated all social strata during the Song Dynasty, leading to the widespread emergence of "plum-under-moon" imagery by the Southern Song period. In this era, the quiet elegance, subtle fragrance, and ethereal quality of plum blossoms resonated with the refined and restrained aesthetic sensibility of the literati. The incorporation of the moon further accentuated the symbolic dialogue and spiritual affinity between the faint fragrance of the plum blossom and the noble, reclusive character ideal. This period established a new spiritual paradigm in the tradition of plum blossom appreciation, which scholars often attribute to the influence of Neo-Confucianism embraced by Northern Song intellectuals. By examining representations of the "The Plum-and-Moon Motif" motif in paintings by Ma Yuan and related decorative arts from the Southern Song Dynasty, this paper explores the connection between the cultural spirit and aesthetic connotations of this imagery and the broader literati ethos of the Song Dynasty. Through this analysis, the significance of this classic Chinese aesthetic symbol is further elucidated.

본 논문은 남송 시기에 유행한 ‘매초월(梅梢月)’ 도상, 즉 매화와 달이 어우러진 이미지 형식의 미학적 의미와 내포하는 문화적·정신적 함의를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있 다. 기존 도상에 따르면, ‘매초월’ 양식의 이미지는 남송 시기에 처음 등장한 것으로 보 인다. 송 초기 임포(林逋)와 소식(蘇軾)의 시문에서 비롯된 시적 이미지가 사회 각 계 층에 걸쳐 점차 확산되며 유행함에 따라, 남송 시기에는 이 도상이 집중적으로 나타나 게 되었다. 송대에는 ‘담백하고 우아하며 그윽한 향’을 지닌 매화의 성격과 ‘청아하고 절제된’ 심미적 인격이 상호 작용하며, 달과 매화가 함께 비추는 이미지가 더해짐으로 써 매화의 은은한 향기와 고결하며 외로운 품성이 강조되는 것이 관찰된다. 이는 매화 와 달을 통해 인격적·정신적 이상이 시각적으로 형상화된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 송대에 정립된 새로운 영매(詠梅)의 정신적 전형은 그 내면적 배경으로 북송 사대부 계층이 숭상하던 ‘신유학(新儒学)’의 영향과 관련이 깊은 것으로 해석된다. 본 논문은 남송 마 원(馬遠)의 회화 및 관련 공예 미술에 나타난 ‘매초월’ 도상의 구현 양상을 분석함으로 써, 이 도상에 담긴 문화적 정신과 미학 가치, 송대 문인 정신이 지향한 ‘문화의 극치’ 와의 연관성을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 ‘매초월’이라는 전형적인 중국식 미학 도상의 상징 성과 그 내면 의미를 명확히 밝히고자 한다.
