This study investigates the relationship between corporate water risk and the stickiness of selling and administrative (SG&A) expenses. The sample comprises 337 firm-year observations from 116 non-financial firms listed on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets with December fiscal year-ends that disclosed sustainability reports in 2022. Using a cost stickiness model, we analyze the cost behavior of firms with high water-use intensity relative to sales. We employ regression analysis to test whether exposure to water risk leads to asymmetric SG&A cost behavior. Among high water-use firms, we do not find consistent evidence of either cost stickiness or cost anti-stickiness in SG&A. Additionally, when separating firms based on year-over-year changes in fixed assets, only those with increasing fixed assets exhibit downward SG&A cost flexibility (i.e., anti-stickiness) under conditions of water risk. Taken together, these results suggest that firms with both high water-use intensity and a growing need for process improvement—as indicated by increasing fixed assets—tend to reduce SG&A expenses more flexibly in response to sales declines, and reallocate resources toward investments addressing water-related operational challenges.

본 연구에서는 기업의 물 위험과 판매관리비 하방경직성의 관계를 살펴본다. 2022년 지속가능경영 보고서를공시한12월결산비금융업유가증권및코스닥시장상장116개기업의337 기업-연도데이터를 표본으로 원가의 하방경직성 모형을 활용하여 용수사용량의 매출집약도가 높은 기업의 원가 행태를 분석하였다. 회귀분석을 이용하여 기업의 물위험이판매관리비의 비대칭성에미치는영향을검증하였다. 용수사용량이많은기업의판매관리비에대해서는원가의하방경직성이나 하방탄력성의결과가발견되지 않았다. 아울러 전년 대비 당해년도 유형자산의 규모가 증가하는 기업과 감소하는 기업을 나누어서 판매관리비원가의하방경직성을테스트한결과, 유형자산의규모가증가하는경우에만물위험이존재하는 기업들의 판매관리비가 하방탄력적인 양상을 보였다. 종합적으로 결과를 해석하면, 용수사용량 집약도가 높아서 물 위험이 크고 유형자산이 증가하여 공정개선에 대한 필요성이 있는 기업의 경우에는 매출 감소시 판매관리비를 탄력적으로 감소시켜 투자 재원에 활용하고 있다고 볼 수 있다.
