Cycling has established itself as a representative eco-friendly leisure activity, readily available in our daily lives. Cycling is a sport primarily enjoyed outdoors, immersed in nature, and safety is paramount. Unlike cars, cycling is subject to external impacts, increasing the risk of head injuries in the event of an accident. Therefore, while helmets are mandatory, they are not yet widely adopted. Therefore, this study examines patents related to cycle helmets and uses them as a foundation for future cycling as a recreational sport, the development of cycling patent technology, and the development of cycling safety-related policies. The patent search was conducted using KIPRIS (www.kipris.or.kr), a patent information search service hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), covering data registered with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) from 2014 to 2024, using the keyword "cycle helmet." The results of this study are as follows. First, the number of patent applications for cycle helmets was high in 2017 and 2018, before the COVID-19 outbreak. Second, we confirmed that there have been recent patents for cycle helmets that incorporate technologies such as sensors. Based on the patent status and trends related to cycle helmets, it is expected that safety helmets incorporating cutting-edge technologies will continue to be patented. The impact of such technologies on all cycling-related products is expected to be significant, and continued development is anticipated.

사이클은 우리 일상생활에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 가장 대표적인 친환경 여가수단으로 자리매김하고 있다. 사이클 은 자연과 함께 주로 야외에서 이루어지는 스포츠 활동으로 안전이 매우 중요한데 사이클은 자동차와 달리 외부 충격을 그대로 받을 수밖에 없기 때문에 사고 발생 시 머리 부상을 입을 확률이 매우 높다. 그렇기에 헬멧은 착용이 의무화 되었지 만 아직까지 널리 정착되지 않은 상태이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 사이클 헬멧과 관련한 특허들을 알아보고 향후 생활스포 츠로서의 사이클 이용 방향과 사이클 특허기술의 발전, 그리고 사이클 안전 관련 정책수립의 기초자료로 활용하는데 그 목적이 특허검색은 대한민국 특허청이 소장한 특허 정보 검색 서비스인 키프리스(KIPRIS, www.kipris.or.kr)를 대상으 로 대한민국 특허청에 등록된 2014년부터 2024년까지의 자료를 검색하였고, 검색어는‘사이클 헬멧’이다. 본 연구를 통 해 나타난 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 코로나19가 창궐하기 전인 2017년과 2018년에 사이클 헬멧의 특허 출원 수가 많았 음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 사이클 헬멧은 최근에는 센서 등의 기술들이 포함된 특허들이 있음을 확인하였다. 이상과 같이 사이클 헬멧과 관련한 특허 등록상태와 동향을 알아보았을 때, 첨단 기술들이 접목된 안전 관련 헬멧들이 특허로 나올 것으로 예상된다. 향후 사이클과 관련된 모든 품목들에서 이와 같은 기술이 관련 산업에 미치는 영향은 매우 클 것으로 예상되며, 앞으로도 지속적인 발전이 기대된다.
