The purpose of this study is to explore Donghak’s practical directions for a better life in various areas of our society under the main theme of ‘Donghak and the Modern Era’. Rather than employing a specific research methodology, this paper aims to present a direction for modernizing Donghak by posing realistic questions about our daily lives to seek concrete solutions to current issues. Based on the research content, the questions for different sectors of our society that will be addressed are: ‘Why can’t children play? (Education)’, ‘Why are we getting sick? (Culture)’, ‘Why is the flow of money unequal? (Politics and Economy),’ ‘Why can’t Donghak’s agenda lead civic consciousness? (Philosophy and Thought)’. The study will explore Donghak’s solutions to these issues. The study’s findings are as follows: ‘Applying a life-friendly educational approach is essential (Education)’, ‘It’s necessary to expand the concept of equality by moving away from anthropocentrism and embracing a reverence for all things (Culture)’, ‘Strengthening democracy is a crucial mechanism for alleviating economic inequality (Politics and Economy)’, ‘It’s necessary to move beyond identity politics and pursue a valueoriented approach based on the spirit of Donghak (Philosophy and Thought). In short, the key to solving these issues lies in restoring the essence of Donghak.

이 연구의 목적은 ‘동학과 현대’라는 대주제 아래 우리 사회의 각 영역에서 더 나은 삶을 위한 동학적 실천 방향을 탐색하려는 데에 있다. 이 글은 동학 현대화의 방향성 제시에 그 목적을 둔 만큼 특정 연구 방법론을 활용하는 대신 우리 일상에 필요한 현실적인 질문을 던짐으로 써 문제 현상의 구체적인 해법을 모색해 보려 한다. 이 연구의 내용으로 우리 사회의 각 영역에 필요한 질문으로는, ‘아 이들은 왜 놀지 못하는가?(교육)’, ‘우리는 왜 병들어 가는가?(문화)’, ‘돈의 흐름은 왜 불평등한가?(정치와 경제)’, ‘동학의 아젠다는 왜 시민 의식을 선도하지 못하는가?(철학과 사상)’와 같은 질문에 대한 동학적 해법을 다룬다. 이 연구의 결과는, ‘생명 친화적 교육 방식의 적용이 필수적이다(교 육)’, ‘인간중심주의에서 벗어나 만물존중주의를 지향하는 평등의 확장 이 필요하다(문화)’, ‘민주주의 강화는 경제 불평등을 완화할 필수 기재 이다(정치와 경제)’, ‘정체성 정치를 걷어내고, 동학 정신에 기반을 둔 가치 중심의 지향이 필요하다(철학과 사상)’. 즉, 동학의 본질을 회복해가는 데에 문제 해결의 핵심이 있다.
