This study aims to analyze the meaning and educational value of popular music in the 2022 Revised Music Curriculum and to explore ways to incorporate it into elementary music education in Korea by examining cases from the United States and the United Kingdom. The definition and educational significance of popular music, as well as its representation in the curriculum, were examined. The U.S. *Modern Band* and the U.K. *Musical Futures* programs were compared in terms of target grades, genres, teachinglearning approaches, teacher support, and curriculum linkage. Results indicate that popular music, by connecting learners’ real-life musical experiences with curriculum content, enhances engagement, autonomy, creativity, and multicultural awareness. Key features identified include institutional and material support, flexible teachinglearning methods, emphasis on student initiative and informal learning, and diverse cultural music experiences. To adopt popular music in Korean elementary schools, specific achievement standards, activity examples, equipment provision, teacher training, and flexible, context-based lesson designs are recommended. This study provides a foundation for developing strategies to integrate popular music into Korean elementary music education.

본 연구는 2022 개정 음악과 교육과정에서 대중음악의 의미와 교육적 가치를 분석 하고, 미국과 영국의 초등학교 대중음악 교육 사례를 고찰하여 우리나라 초등 음악교 육에서의 수용 방안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 대중음악의 정의와 교 육적 의의를 검토하고, 교육과정 문서에 명시된 대중음악 관련 내용을 분석하였다. 이 어 미국 Modern Band 프로그램과 영국 Musical Futures 프로젝트를 선정하여 대상 학 년, 주요 장르, 교수·학습 방식, 교사 지원, 교육과정 연계 측면에서 비교·분석하였다. 연구 결과, 대중음악은 학습자의 실제 음악 경험과 교과 내용을 연결하여 흥미·몰입도, 자율성, 창의성, 다문화 감수성 함양에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 해외 사례 분석을 통 해 안정적 초등 대중음악교육을 위해 제도적 기반과 물적 지원, 유연한 교수·학습 방법, 학생 주도성과 비형식 학습의 강조 등이 주요 특징으로 확인되었다. 이에 따라 국내 초 등 음악교육에서는 교육과정 내 구체적 성취기준과 활동 예시 제시, 악기·디지털 장비 지원, 교사 전문성 강화, 비형식 학습 요소 도입, 다문화 음악 경험 확대, 지역·학교 상 황에 맞춘 유연한 수업 설계가 필요하다. 본 연구는 우리나라 초등학교 음악교육에서 대중음악 수용 방안 모색을 위한 기초로서 의의를 지닌다.
