This study was conducted to explore the learning experiences of adult nursing students who combine employment with academic study. The participants were 46 working adult freshmen enrolled in the Department of Nursing at D University in G city. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed through Krippendorff’s content analysis procedures, including unitizing, coding, categorization, and inference. The analysis revealed four overarching categories and eight subcategories of learning experiences: “Encountering the challenging journey of balancing work and study,” “Struggling with adaptation to learning,” “Facing ambivalent emotions,” and “Enduring hardships but pursuing a meaningful path to becoming a nurse.” Despite realistic difficulties such as physical limitations, lack of time, and academic stress, participants reported positive outcomes including a sense of achievement, enhanced self-esteem, and the establishment of a professional identity. These findings suggest the need for tailored academic systems, digital literacy education, and emotional support structures for working adult nursing students. Furthermore, this study provides empirical evidence of the complex challenges faced by working learners, offering a basis for developing adult learner–friendly teaching and learning strategies. By proposing support measures tailored to the unique characteristics of nursing education, it confirms the potential to promote both academic success and professional growth of adult nursing students. Ultimately, the study offers practical implications for sustainable academic engagement and the establishment of a lifelong learning system for working adult learners in nursing.

본 연구는 직장생활과 학업을 병행하는 만학도 간호대학생의 학습경험을 탐색하기 위해 수행되었다. 연 구 참여자는 G 시 소재 D 대학 간호학과 1학년에 재학 중인 직장인 만학도 46명이었으며, 자료는 구조화 된 설문지를 통해 수집하였다. 자료 분석은 Krippendorff의 내용분석 절차에 따라 단위화, 코딩, 범주화, 추 론 과정을 거쳐 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 직장인 만학도 간호대학생의 학습경험은 ‘쉽지 않은 직장·학업 병 행 여정에 놓여짐’, ‘학습 적응과정의 어려움’, ‘양가적 정서와 맞닥뜨림’, ‘힘들지만, 가치 있는 간호사 되는 길’의 네 가지 상위범주와 여덟 개의 하위범주로 도출되었다. 참여자들은 체력적 한계, 시간 부족, 학업 스 트레스 등 현실적 어려움에도 불구하고 성취감, 자존감 향상, 전문직 정체성 확립이라는 긍정적 결과를 경 험하였다. 이러한 결과는 직장인 만학도 간호대학생을 위한 맞춤형 학사제도 운영, 디지털 활용 교육, 정서 적 지원체계 구축의 필요성을 시사한다. 더 나아가 본 연구는 직장인 학습자가 직면하는 복합적 문제를 실 증적으로 제시함으로써 직장인 만학도 친화적 교수·학습 전략 개발의 근거를 제공한다. 또한, 간호교육의 특수성을 고려한 맞춤형 지원 방안을 제안하여 직장인 만학도의 학업 성공과 전문직 성장에 기여할 수 있 음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 직장인 만학도 간호대학생의 지속 가능한 학업 참여와 평생교육 체제 확립에 실질적 함의를 제공한다.
