This study assessed the accuracy of the reconstructed metal-type printing plate displayed at the Cheongju Early Printing Museum, using the 2015 digital image of the original Jikji Volume II held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The contents of the obverse and reverse of the first leaf, absent since the late nineteenth-century acquisition, were inferred by reference to the woodblock edition. Both the metal- type and woodblock v ersions contain 11 l ines p er h alf-frame, b ut l ine length differs and certain characters are used differently. We examined these features through close image comparison. The typesetting and content of the reconstructed metal plate for the first leaf of Jikji Volume II were largely verified as accurate, based on the woodblock text and diagnostic differences between the metal-type and woodblock versions. However, a ditto mark used only in the woodblock edition was mistakenly included in the reconstructed plate. By contrast, the character “无” for “無,” found only in the woodblock version, was correctly replaced with “無” in the reconstructed metal plate. Thus, some parts were artificially modified while others faithfully reflected the original. We conclude with practical points to consider when restoring metal-type printing plates.

본 연구에서는 2015년에 프랑스 국립도서관 (BnF) 소장 직지(直指) 하권 원본의 디지털 이미지를 바탕으로 청주고인쇄박물관에서 복원된 금속활자 인판의 정확성을 조사하였다. 19세 기 말 수집 당시부터 없었던 제1장 전엽과 후엽의 내용은 목판본을 참고로 파악이 가능하다. 금속활자본과 목판본 모두 반곽에 11행의 구성으로 되어 있으나 행별 자수가 다르고 일부 글자 의 표기 방법에 차이가 있다. 금속활자본과 목판본의 이미지를 면밀하게 비교하여 각 판본의 특징을 조사하였다. 직지 하권 제1장 복원 인판의 구성과 내용을 목판본의 내용과 금속활자본 과 목판본 간의 특징적인 차이를 바탕으로 금속활자 인판 복원의 정확성을 검증하였다. 복원된 금속활자 인판에는 목판본에서만 사용된 같은 글자가 반복될 때 사용되는 이중부호를 사용한 것이 확인되었다. 목판본에서만 사용된 없을 무(无)자는 복원된 금속활자 인판에서는 모두 없 을 무(無)로 교체되어 올바르게 복원되었음을 확인하였다. 직지 하권 제2장부터 제39장까지와 상권 제1장부터 제39장까지의 목판본과 복원된 금속활자 인판을 비교하였다. 인위적으로 수정 된 부분과 원본에 충실하게 복원한 부분이 혼재하고 있음이 확인되었다. 금속활자 인판 복원 시의 주의점을 정리하였다.
