This study investigates the experiences of undeclared students in the newly founded School of Interdisciplinary Studies at University A in 2025, identifies limitations in the major selection support system, and suggests improvements. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with students and faculty, literature review, and case analysis. Findings show, first, the university lacked a systematic support system and annual plan, making major exploration difficult. Second, while students expressed initial satisfaction, they noted insufficient advising, limited information access, lack of diverse exploration programs, and absence of mentoring. Third, major choices were driven more by external factors such as government support, job prospects, and parental advice than by personal interests, differing from prior studies that emphasized individual characteristics. To address these issues, the study proposes measures such as a major selection roadmap, foundational and general education courses, strengthened academic advising, mentoring programs, and expanded major fairs and field experiences.

본 연구는 2025학년도에 자율전공학부를 신설한 A 대학을 대상으로 무전공 학생의 전공선택 경험과 지원체계의 현황과 문제점을 분석하고 개선방안을 제시하는 데 목적 이 있다. 이를 위해 자율전공학부 학생과 교직원을 대상으로 한 심층면담, 문헌 검토 및 국내외 대학 사례분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, A 대학은 무전공 학생을 위한 체계적 지원 시스템과 연간 계획이 부재하여 학생들이 전공 탐색 과정에서 어려움을 겪었다. 둘째, 학생들은 초기 지원에는 대체로 만족했으나, 상담의 체계성과 정보 제공 의 불충분성을 지적하였으며, 전공탐색 캠프의 다양성과 멘토링 프로그램 부족에 불만 을 나타냈다. 셋째, 전공선택은 개인의 적성이나 흥미보다는 정부 재정지원, 취업 가능 성, 부모의 직업 및 조언 등 외부 요인에 크게 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결 과는 전공선택의 주요 요인을 개인적 특성으로 제시한 선행연구와 차별성을 지닌다. 이러한 결과를 토대로, 본 연구는 무전공 학생을 위한 전공선택 로드맵 제공, 전공기초 및 교양 교과 운영, 교수 상담 체계화, 선배·동료 멘토링, 전공박람회와 현장학습 확대 등 지원 방안을 제안하였다.
