This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the classification system and cultural context of traditional Thai musical instruments, thereby deepening the relatively limited academic understanding of these instruments in Korea, enhancing recognition of Southeast Asian music culture, and exploring the potential for connections with Korean traditional instruments and music education. The study first examines the historical development of Thai traditional music, dividing it into the Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin periods, and organizes its social functions and roles, methods of instrument production and transmission, and contemporary changes. It then presents a classification of Thai traditional instruments based on performance techniques, ensemble configurations, and traditional performance practices, and compares these with the internationally recognized HornbostelSachs system, identifying similarities and differences. The findings confirm that Thai traditional instruments are deeply rooted in the broader socio-cultural sphere, including history, rituals, performing arts, and dance, while retaining a distinctive nomenclature system and symbolism. Furthermore, contemporary transformations—such as their adaptation into performing arts, educational content, and cultural tourism resources—have contributed to enhancing their potential for international application. By illuminating the multi-layered value and contemporary significance of Thai traditional instruments, this study is expected to contribute to establishing an academic foundation for clarifying interrelationships among Asian traditional instruments from an intercultural perspective, as well as for developing multicultural music education and cultural exchange content.

본 연구는 태국 전통악기의 분류 체계와 문화적 맥락을 심층적으로 분석하여, 국내에서 상대적으로 미비했던 태국 전통악기에 대한 학문적 이해를 심화하고, 이를 토대 로 동남아시아 음악 문화에 대한 인식을 제고하며 한국 전통악기 및 음악교육과의 연 계 가능성을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구에서는 먼저 태국 전통음악의 역사적 전개를 쑤코타이, 아유타야, 라따나꼬신 시기로 구분하여 고찰하고, 사회적 기능과 역 할, 악기 제작과 전승 방식, 현대적 변화 양상을 정리하였다. 이어 연주법, 편성, 전통적 연주 방식에 따른 태국 전통악기 분류를 제시하고, 이를 국제적으로 통용되는 호른보 스텔작스( HornbostelSachs) 악기분류법과 비교하여 공통점과 차이점을 분석하였 다. 연구 결과, 태국 전통악기는 역사·의례·연희·무용 등 사회문화 전반에 깊이 뿌리내 려 있으며, 독자적인 명칭 체계와 상징성을 유지하고 있음이 확인되었다. 또한 현대 사 회에서의 공연 예술화, 교육 콘텐츠화, 문화관광 자원화와 같은 변용 양상은 국제적 활 용 가능성을 높이는 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 분석을 통해 태국 전통 악기의 다층적 가치와 현대적 의미를 조명함으로써, 향후 비교문화적 관점에서 아시아 전통악기 간 상호 관계를 규명하고, 다문화 음악교육 및 문화교류 콘텐츠 개발의 학술 적 기반을 마련하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
