This study examines the historical, ethical, and aesthetic significance of photographs secretly taken in Nazi concentration camps, focusing on Christophe Cognet's Éclats (2019) and the documentary film (2021). Christophe Cognet, a French filmmaker and visual culture researcher, explores the ethics and limitations of Holocaust representation through images that prisoners risked their lives to capture within the camps. In this study, we analyze photographs from the concentration camps of Dachau, Buchenwald, and Mittelbau-Dora, medical experiment photographs from Ravensbrück, and four Sonderkommando photographs from Auschwitz-Birkenau. These photographs are not mere records but rather ‘traces of vision’ captured under extreme circumstances, where even the defects of shaky and blurred images are interpreted as signs of ethical truthfulness. Christophe Cognet's work integrates the image debate between Claude Lanzmann and Georges Didi-Huberman, understanding images as ‘physical traces and acts’. Éclats delves into the interior of images through linguistic analysis, while pursues sensory knowledge by walking through the actual sites. Both works present a practical philosophy that questions what kind of ethical gaze and responsibility one should bear in the face of past suffering.
