‘Nvshu’ is a character independently created and used by women who lacked formal education in the Jiangyong region of Hunan Province, China. Despite approaching extinction in the 1990s, ‘Nvshu’ has experienced a resurgence in public visibility in recent years. The evolving discourse on female identity and modes of expression, influenced by the development of feminism and the proliferation of social media in contemporary China. This study aims to investigate the contemporary re-utilization of ‘Nvshu’ and to elucidate its cultural significance. Employing both literature review and case study methods, this study explores the application of ‘Nvshu’ within the realm of media arts, visual arts, and performing arts, analyzing its cultural, social, and artistic significance. The study identifies five key dimensions of ‘Nvshu’s contemporary significance: (1) its role as a symbol of Chinese women’s identity; (2) its function as a medium of female solidarity; (3) its contribution to the inheritance of local traditional culture; (4) its capacity to generate economic value; and (5) its embodiment of aesthetic qualities. In conclusion, ‘Nvshu’ can be recognized in China as a rare form of traditional cultural practice that embodies female identity and solidarity, and is increasingly regarded as a significant cultural symbol.

‘여서(女書)’는 중국 후난성 강영(江永) 지역에서 과거 문자 교육을 받지 못 한 여성들이 독자적으로 창제해 사용한 문자이다. 1990년대 사실상 소멸 위기 에 처하였던 여서 문자는 최근 들어 다시 대중의 주목을 받고 있다. 중국의 페 미니즘과 소셜 미디어의 발전에 따라 여성의 정체성과 표현 방식에 새로운 변 화가 일어나는 것이 그 원인으로 꼽히고 있다. 본 연구는 중국의 여성 문자인 여서가 오늘날 다시 활용되는 양상에 대해 알아보고 그 의의를 파악하는 데 목적이 있다. 따라서 문헌연구와 사례연구 방법을 활용하여 매체, 시각, 공연 예술에서 여서 문자가 활용된 사례를 분석하였으며, 각각 문화적, 사회적, 예술 적 의미에서 구체적으로 서술하였다. 그에 따라 여서 문자의 현대적 활용 의의 로 첫째, 중국 여성 정체성 상징, 둘째, 여성의 연대, 셋째, 지역 전통문화 전 승, 넷째, 경제적 효과, 다섯째, 심미적 가치 등 다섯 가지를 연구 결과로 도출 하였다. 결론적으로, 중국에서 여서 문자는 여성 정체성과 연대를 강조한 보기 드문 전통 사례로 인식되며, 오늘날에는 문화적 상징으로 자리매김하고 있는 것으로 파악할 수 있다.
