This study aims to explore the roles performed by artists in urban regeneration projects and the essence of their participation experiences through a phenomenological approach, thereby providing an in-depth understanding of the socio-cultural significance of culture- and arts-based urban regeneration. The research participants comprised three artists who took part in the “Cultural Village Coordinator Project” in collaboration with the Urban Regeneration Support Center of Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, in 2023. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. The analysis revealed three overarching categories—interaction with the local community, achievement and growth through collaboration, and institutional limitations and sustainability—comprising a total of 20 themes. The artists functioned not only as creators but also as mediators and practical cultural facilitators who reinterpreted local cultural assets and engaged in dialogue with the community. Through collaborative processes, they experienced self-reflection and artistic expansion, contributing to the cultural transformation of everyday spaces through creative interpretation in interactions with residents. However, the administrative structure of the projects limited their creativity and autonomy, highlighting the need for institutional support to ensure their sustainable participation. This study empirically confirms the multifaceted roles of artists as active agents in urban regeneration and emphasizes the necessity of institutionalizing their participation as a strategic component in future policy design and system improvement for culture- and arts-based urban regeneration.

본 연구는 도시재생사업의 현장에서 예술인이 수행하는 역할과 그 참여경험의 본질을 현상학적 방법론을 통해 탐색하고, 문화예술 기반 도시재생의 사회 적·문화적 의미를 심층적으로 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구대상은 2023년 광주광역시 동구 도시재생지원센터와 협업하여 ｢문화마을코디네이터 사업｣에 참여한 예술인 3명이며, 이들의 경험을 심층면담을 통해 수집하고 Colaizzi의 현상학적 방법론에 따라 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 예술인의 참여경험은 ‘지역사회와의 상호작용’, ‘협업을 통한 성 취와 성장’, ‘제도적 한계와 지속가능성’이라는 세 범주와 총 20개의 주제로 도 출되었다. 예술인들은 단순한 창작자를 넘어 지역의 문화적 자산을 재해석하고 공동체와 소통하는 중재자이자 실천적 문화매개자로서 기능하였다. 또한 협업 과정에서 내적 성찰과 예술적 확장을 경험하였으며, 주민과의 상호작용 속에서 창의적 해석을 통해 일상 공간을 문화적으로 전환하는 데 기여하였다. 한편, 행정 중심의 사업 구조는 예술인의 창의성과 자율성을 제약하는 한계 로 작용하였으며, 예술인의 지속가능한 참여를 위한 제도적 지원의 필요성이 제기되었다. 본 연구는 예술인이 도시재생의 주체적 행위자로서 수행하는 다층 적 역할을 실증적으로 확인하였으며, 향후 문화예술 기반 도시재생의 정책 설 계 및 제도 개선 과정에서 예술인의 참여를 전략적 요소로 제도화할 필요성을 강조한다.
