This study analyzes the war and division-related trauma expressed in the poetry of Kim Jong-sam and explores the possibility of healing through the theoretical frameworks of Cathy Caruth’s trauma theory and Viktor Frankl’s concept of tragic optimism. According to Caruth, trauma is not immediately verbalized at the moment of its occurrence but manifests as belated, repetitive recollections, and the process of speaking and listening becomes the beginning of healing. Frankl defines the attitude of continuing to seek meaning in life despite extreme suffering as “tragic optimism,” emphasizing the human capacity for self-transcendence. Focusing on Kim Jong-sam’s major poems—such as Civilian, Stone Wall, Separated Families, Non-poem, and Ink Painting—this study examines how “belated memory” and the “figuration of silence” are represented through poetic language. It also illuminates the poetic speaker’s attitude of reconstructing the meaning of life through gratitude, solidarity, and imagination in the face of painful realities. The results show that Kim Jong-sam’s poetry bears witness to both personal and historical wounds in a poetic form, thereby creating an ethical space where readers can empathize with and reflect upon those memories. By reinterpreting Kim Jong-sam’s poetry from the perspective of trauma literature, this study offers a multilayered understanding of the message of healing and hope embedded in despair, and suggests a new theoretical direction for postwar Korean literary studies.

본 연구는 김종삼 시에 드러난 전쟁․분단 트라우마와 그 치유 가능성을 캐시 캐루스의 트라우마 이론 및 빅터 프랭클의 비극적 낙관주의 이론 을 통해 분석한다. 캐루스에 따르면 트라우마는 즉시 언어화되지 못한 채 반복적 회상으로 나타나며, 말하기와 듣기의 과정을 통해 치유가 시작 된다. 프랭클은 극심한 고통 속에서도 삶의 의미를 포기하지 않는 태도를 ‘비극적 낙관주의’라 명명하며, 인간의 자기초월 가능성을 강조한다. 본고는 김종삼의 주요 시편들 ｢민간인｣, ｢돌각담｣, ｢이산가족｣, ｢非詩 ｣, ｢墨畵｣을 중심으로 트라우마의 ‘지연된 기억’과 ‘침묵의 형상화’가 어 떻게 시적 언어로 표현되는지를 분석하였다. 또한 고통스러운 현실 속에 서도 감사, 연대, 상상력을 통해 삶의 의미를 재구성하는 시적 화자의 태도를 조명하였다. 그 결과 김종삼 시는 개인적․역사적 상처를 시적으로 증언함으로써, 독자가 그 기억에 공감하고 함께 성찰할 수 있는 윤리적 공간을 마련하고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 김종삼 시를 트라우마 문학의 관점에서 재조명함으로써 절망 속의 치유 가능성과 희망의 메시지를 다층적으로 이해하고, 전후 문학 연구에 새로운 이론적 방향을 제시한다.
