This study aims to elucidate the process by which the Yeonghae branch of the Jaeryeong Yi clan settled in the Yeonghae region and established a foundation for scholarship. The Yeonghae branch of the Jaeryeong Yi clan, with its wealthy founder Yi Ae, was able to establish a foundation for academic growth through Yi Ham. Yi Ham possessed exceptional Chinese literary skills, becoming the first person in the Yeonghae region to pass the civil service examination. Yi Ham was the first person in the Yeonghae region to pass the civil service examination, possessing exceptional talent in Chinese classics. After passing the civil service examination, he remained in Yeonghae, focusing his efforts on academics, the development of his family, and the cultivation of future generations, rather than pursuing external achievements like official positions. Through this, he laid the foundation for the Yeonghae branch of the Jaeryeong Yi clan to become the central axis of the Toegye school of thought, and he dedicated himself to ensuring the family’s development and the establishment of a school of thought in later generation

본 연구는 재령이씨 영해파가 영해 지역으로 입향하여 학문의 기반을 마련하는 과정을 구명하는 데 목적이 있다. 재령이씨 영해파는 경제력을 지니고 있던 이애가 영해지역으로 입향한 이래 이함에 이르러 학문적으 로 성장하는 기틀을 마련할 수 있었다. 이함은 영해 지역의 최초 문과급 제자일 정도로 학문적 자질이 뛰었났다. 그는 급제 이후 관직 등 외부적 인 성취보다 영해에 머물며 학문과 가문의 발전 및 후학 양성에 힘을 기울였다. 이를 통해 재령이씨 영해파가 퇴계학맥의 중심축이 되는 데 초석을 놓았으며, 후대에 그 가문이 발전하여 가학의 성립을 가능하게 하는 데 노력을 기울였다.
