This paper seeks to elucidate the literary historical significance of Hong Seong-won’s “South and North(􋺷남과 북􋺸).” “South and North” has long been considered an anti-communist novel. However, this paper views it as a work that transcends anti-communism and ideological conflict. This paper discusses the narrative style, characterization, detailed narrative development, and thematic focus of “South and North.” According to this analysis, the most outstanding characteristic of “South and North” lies in its portrayal of the violence of war itself through the characters’ experiences. While “South and North” employs a third-person narrative, the specific aspects of these experiences are portrayed through the characters’ perspectives. Furthermore, the individuals who provide war experience are primarily members of South Korea’s middle class, including the petit bourgeoisie and white-collar workers. Based on this basic narrative framework, “South and North” depicts the fierce and brutal battles of soldiers and the miserable and arduous struggle for survival of civilians. Of course, such battles and struggles for survival also inherently contained a “deep sense of emptiness.” This sense stemmed from the necessity of fighting and struggling for survival without understanding the reasons for the fighting or the harm suffered. The resentment and anger of the middle class, who had suddenly lost their pre-war peaceful lives and were forced to experience the violence of war, are expressed throughout “South and North.” The literary significance of “South and North” can be understood from the perspective mentioned above. While previous novels based their understanding of the Korean War on the ideological conflict between North and South Korea, this novel, grounded in the resentment and anger of the middle class, does not view ideological conflict as the true cause of the war. This allows “South and North” to distance itself from ideological conflict and focus solely on reconstructing the experiences of the middle class. As a result, “South and North” broke away from the 1960s novels that focused on the ideological conflict between North and South Korea and took a leading position among the 1970s novels that sought to reconstruct the war itself. However, the novel’s flaw lies in its exclusion of the experiences of the common people, who constituted the majority of those who experienced the war. Nevertheless, by restoring the experiences of the middle class in this way, it became an intermediate work on the path to novels that viewed the Korean War from the perspective of the common people in the 1980s, which also contributes to its literary significance.

이 논문은 홍성원의 『남과 북』의 문학사적 의의를 밝히기 위해 시도된 것이다. 이 작품은 그동안 반공주의적인 소설로 평가되어 왔지만, 이 논 문에서는 그러한 평가 대신 반공주의나 이데올로기 대립을 벗어난 내용 으로 이루어진 작품으로 보고자 했다. 『남과 북』을 분석하기 위해 이 논문에서는 서사의 틀과 인물 구성에서 부터 세부적인 서사의 전개와 그에 따른 주제 의식 등에 대해 논하였다. 이에 따르면 『남과 북』 전반을 통해 일관되게 나타나는 가장 두드러진 특징은 전쟁 자체의 폭력성을 인물들의 체험을 중심으로 드러내는 데 있었다. 이를 위해 『남과 북』은 3인칭 시점을 기본으로 삼되, 체험의 구체 적 양상은 인물 시점으로 그려내는 서술 방식을 택하고, 전쟁 체험 제공 자들도 프티 부르주아와 화이트칼라 등 남한의 중간계층을 중심으로 구 성하였다. 이러한 서사의 틀을 기반으로 군인들의 치열하고도 참혹한 전 투들을 그려낼 수 있었으며, 민간인들의 비참하고도 고난 어린 생존 투쟁 을 담아낼 수 있었다. 물론 그러한 전투와 생존 투쟁은 사실 ‘깊은 공허감’을 내재한 것이기 도 했다. 왜 전투를 했는지 그리고 왜 피해를 입어야 했는지는 모르는 상태에서 싸워야 했고 생존 투쟁을 해야 했던 것이 전쟁의 폭력성이 가져 온 결과였다고 할 수 있다. 그런 점에서 전쟁 이전의 평안한 생활을 갑자 기 잃어버린 채 전쟁의 폭력성을 갑자기 겪어야만 했던 중간계층의 억울 함과 분노의 정서가 『남과 북』 전반에 표출되고 있다. 『남과 북』의 문학사적 의의가 기반하는 것도 이 지점이다. 이전의 소설 들이 6․25를 이해하는 근간을 이데올로기 대립에 두었다면, 이 소설은 중간계층의 억울함과 분노에 기반하고 있기에 이데올로기 대립을 전쟁 의 진정한 요인으로 보지 않는 것이다. 그리고 이로써 『남과 북』은 이데 올로기 대립과 거리를 둔 채 오로지 중간계층의 체험을 재구하는 데 몰두 할 수 있었다. 그 결과 남북한 이데올로기에 대한 동시 비판을 내세웠던 1960년대 소설과 결별하고 전쟁 자체를 바라보기 시작한 1970년대 소설 의 선편을 쥘 수 있었던 것이다. 그러나 전쟁 체험의 대다수를 이룰 기층 민중들의 체험이 『남과 북』에서 배제된 것은 이 소설의 결점이다. 그렇지만 이처럼 중간계층의 체험을 재구함으로써 1980년대에 기층 민중의 입장에서 6ㆍ25를 바라본 소설 들로 나아가기 위한 중간 단계를 거치게 되었다는 점에서도 이 소설의 문학사적 의의가 있을 것이다.
