This paper examines the historical change of “kuso”, an adverb that expresses emphasis in the language of the younger generation of modern Japanese. “Kuso” originally denoted “excrement” as a noun, but its usage gradually extended through figurative, exclamatory, and prefixal forms, eventually coming to function as an adverb. In the early modern period, it was used primarily in the form “kuso + adjective,” intensifying negative meanings. In contemporary Japanese, however, its usage has further expanded into both “kuso + adjective” and “kuso + verb” constructions. It now functions as an adverb that emphasizes degree regardless of whether the evaluation is positive or negative. Through this diachronic change, the original negative image of “kuso” has diminished, and the word has come to be established as a general degree adverb.

本研究は、現代日本語の若者ことばにおける強調を表す副詞の一つである｢くそ｣の歴史的変化過程を考察したものである。その結果、｢くそ｣は本来｢排泄物｣を表す名詞から現れ、比喩的用法、感動詞用法、接頭辞用法を経て、副詞的用法へと拡張してきたことが明らかになった。 特に副詞化の過程では、近代には｢くそ＋形容詞｣形で初めて現れ、マイナス的イメージを強調し、現代には｢くそ＋形容詞･動詞｣形へと使用範囲が広くなり、マイナス･プラス的イメージを問わず、程度を強調する副詞として用いられるようになった。 このような過程を通じて、｢くそ｣が本来もっていたマイナス的な意味は薄まり、単に程度を強調する副詞として定着したことがわかった。

본 논문은 현대 일본어의 젊은 세대 언어에서 강조를 나타내는 부사 중 하나인 ‘くそ(kuso)’를 대상으로 역사적 변화 과정을 고찰한 것이다. ‘くそ’는 본래 ‘배설물’을 의미하는 명사에서 시간의 흐름에 따라 비유적 용법, 감동사적 용법, 접두사적 용법을 거쳐 부사로서의 기능까지 확장되었다. 특히 부사적 용법으로 확대되어 가는 과정을 보면, 근대 시대에 ‘くそ+형용사’의 형태로 부정적 의미를 강조하였으며, 이후 현대에 이르러 ‘くそ+형용사’ 뿐만 아니라 ‘くそ+동사’의 형태로 확대되어 부정적･긍정적 의미와 관계없이 정도를 강조하는 용법으로 확대되었다. 이러한 변화 과정을 통해 ‘くそ’가 가진 본래의 부정적 이미지가 약해지고 정도를 강조하는 부사로 정착하게 되었음을 알 수 있었다.
