This study aims to examine the narrative characteristics of the ‘Kasane's Story’, one of the four major ghost stories of the Edo period, with a focus on Shiryō Gedatsu Monogatari Kikigaki. Furthermore, this study explores how these characteristics were adapted and used in early modern Japanese ghost stories. During the early modern period, ‘Kasane's Story’ was widely reproduced through various literary and performing arts, revealing a similar pattern which narrative structures repeatedly adopted. In Shiryō Gedatsu Monogatari Kikigaki, Kasane suffers an unjust death due to her unattractive appearance. Kasane’s physical characteristic was later reflected in ghost stories from the late Edo period, in which a character with a distorted face and suffering from hair loss was the standard. The text also presents a curse motif in which the traits or resentment of the deceased are transferred to others. This literary structure appears widely in other early modern ghost stories as well. Hereby, ‘Kasane’s Story’ concretized the depiction of an ugly female ghost in early modern Japanese ghost stories and contributed to the establishment of a narrative structure in which the characteristics of the dead are superimposed onto the living.

본 논문은 에도시대 4대 괴담 중 하나인 ‘가사네 전설(累伝説)’에 대하여, 『시료게다 쓰모노가타리 기키가키(死霊解脱物語聞書)』를 중심으로 그 서사적 특징을 고찰하고, 나아가 이러한 특징들이 근세 괴담 속에서 어떻게 활용되었는지를 살펴보는 것을 목적 으로 한다. ‘가사네 전설’은 근세의 다양한 문예 작품을 통해 재생산되며 널리 유행하 였는데, 그 과정에서 비슷한 서사적 구조가 반복적으로 수용되는 양상이 보인다. 『시료게다쓰모노가타리 기키가키』에서는 가사네가 흉측한 외모로 인하여 억울한 죽 음을 맞이한다. 이러한 가사네의 외적 특징은 『도카이도 요쓰야괴담(東海道四谷怪談)』과 『신케이카사네가후치(真景累ヶ淵)』와 같은 에도시대 후기의 괴담 작품에 수용되어, 한쪽 얼굴이 일그러지고 머리카락이 빠진 모습으로 정형화되었다. 또한 『시료게다쓰모노가타리 기키가키』에서는 죽은 자의 모습이 주변 인물에게 중 첩되어 나타나는 저주가 발생한다. 이는 『사라야시키벤기로쿠(皿屋敷辨疑録)』, 『신케 이카사네가후치』, 『로쿠부고로시(六部殺し)』, 「기비쓰노카마(吉備津の釜)」 등 근세 괴 담 전반에 걸쳐 다양하게 활용되었다. 이와 같이 ‘가사네 전설’은 근세 괴담에 나타나는 여성 원령의 흉측한 외모에 대한 구체화를 비롯하여, 억울하게 죽음을 맞은 자의 특징이 주변 인물에게 중첩되어 나타 나는 서사 구조의 정착에 기여하였음을 보여준다.
