This paper aims to elucidate the historical significance of Oshii Mamoru’s Patlabor: The Movie (1989) through context analysis of its contemporaneous discourse. The analysis begins with Oshii’s critique of AKIRA (1988), a film that attracted public attention at the time. For Oshii, AKIRA’s depiction of the metropolitan destruction and regeneration was scarcely distinguishable from the prevailing logic of urban redevelopment. In a departure from this trend, Oshii turned to the discourses of urban space articulated by Yoshimoto Takaaki and the Street Observation Society. Yoshimoto emphasized the importance of viewing everyday life from the perspective of ordinary people, while the Street Observation Society valued the material presence of objects that persisted in daily space regardless of practical necessity. Influenced by these perspectives, Patlabor reproduces sensory experiences of urban life that cannot be fully grasped through the discussion of redevelopment. The city that Patlabor represents is imbued with the traces of everyday existence such as hand–worn surfaces, outdated buildings, and the tangible charm of street detritus. Thus, Patlabor succeeds in visualizing urban landscapes that were obscured by the dominance of redevelopment in late–1980s Japan.
