This study aims to examine the aspects of epidemic experiences and responses as reflected in diaries from the 16th to 18th centuries, thereby examining the attitudes and thoughts of contemporary people toward epidemics and their literary and sociocultural significance. This study examined 『Mukjae-ilgi(默齋日記)』, 『Swaemi-rok(瑣尾錄)』, 『Ji-am-ilgi(支菴日記)』, 『Cheongdaeilgi( 淸臺日記)』, 『Seungchong-myeongnok(勝聰明錄)』, and 『Heumyeong(欽英)』. Diaries are important sources that specifically capture the aspects of epidemics experienced by contemporary people and their responses to them. Common responses to epidemics include physical distancing, such as isolation and avoidance of contact, to prevent transmission, medical treatment, speculation about the cause of the disease, and recording information about the epidemic. Meanwhile, the experiences of epidemics in diaries realistically depict the outbreak and prevalence of epidemics in the mid-to-late Joseon Dynasty, and can also be connected to the literary landscape of the time, which developed around epidemics.

이 글에서는 16~18세기 일기(日記)류에 나타난 역병(疫病) 체험의 양상과 그 대응 방식을 파악하여 역병에 대한 당대인들의 태도와 사고를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 『묵재일기(默齋日記)』, 『쇄미록(瑣尾錄)』, 『지암일기(支菴日記)』, 『청대일기(淸臺日記)』, 『승총명록(勝聰明錄)』, 『흠영 (欽英)』등을 살펴보았다. 사대부들의 일상과 내면을 구체적으로 보여주는 일기류는 당대인들이 경험한 역병의 양상과 그에 대한 대응을 드러내는 중 요한 자료이다. 역병에 대한 보편적인 대응 방식으로는 전염을 막기 위한 격 리와 피접(避接) 등 물리적인 거리두기, 의학적 치료, 병인(病因)에 대한 상상, 역병에 대한 정보의 기록 등이 있다. 일기류에는 역병이 인간의 삶에 닥 치는 불가항력적인 재난이자 생활 조건임을 인정하고 이를 수용하거나 극복 하려 한 노력이 드러난다. 한편, 일기류의 역병 체험은 조선 중후기 역병의 발생과 유행 양상을 사실적으로 보여주는 동시에, 필기와 야담, 인물 전, 한시, 제문, 유서류 등 여러 역병 소재 문학에서 재현된 개인 및 집단의 체험과 사회상의 배경을 알 수 있게 한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
