The Chinese women’s national volleyball team’s victory at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games was not merely a sporting achievement, but a culturally and historically significant event that was strategically reinterpreted by Chinese media. Grounded in the theoretical framework of “Critical Discourse Analysis”, this study adopts textual analysis and critical discourse analysis to examine how five major Chinese English-language media outlets—China Daily, Global Times, China.org.cn, Xinhua, and South China Morning Post—framed the Rio victory. The focus is on how these representations shaped national identity, conveyed ideological values, and reconstructed gender roles. The analysis reveals three dominant narrative trajectories in the media discourse. First, the victory was framed as a symbolic resurgence of national spirit and a moment of renewed patriotic sentiment. Second, the long-standing notion of the “women’s volleyball spirit” (nü pai jingshen) was rearticulated as a cultural value aligned with contemporary social ideals, emphasizing collective perseverance and intergenerational continuity. Third, head coach Lang Ping was constructed as a symbolic figure　both a national hero and an empowered female leader　serving as a bridge between past and present. These narratives functioned not only to inspire national solidarity, but also to present a confident and progressive image of China to the global audience. This study argues that Chinese media representations of the volleyball team’s success transcend conventional sports reporting. Through selective storytelling and symbolic framing, the media actively participated in shaping national narratives, collective memory, and gender representations. The case of the 2016 volleyball victory illustrates how sport serves as a powerful ideological and cultural medium in China’s soft power strategy under the context of globalization.

2016년 리우 올림픽에서 중국 국가 여자배구대표팀이 금메달을 획득한 사건은 단순 한 스포츠 성과에 그치지 않고, 중국 언론 담론에서 역사적이고 문화적인 의미로 재구성 되었다. 본 연구는 비판적 담론 분석(Critical Discourse Analysis, CDA)이론에 기반하여, , , ＜Xinhua＞, 등 중국의 주 요 영문 매체가 보도한 관련 기사들을 비판적 담론 분석과 텍스트 분석 방법론을 통해 고 찰하였다. 이를 통해 언론이 어떻게 특정한 서사 전략을 통해 국가 정체성을 형성하고, 이데올로기적 가치를 재현하며, 성별 역할을 재구성하였는지를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 중국 언론은 세 가지 주요한 서사 방식으로 2016년 여자배구팀의 승리에 문화적 의미를 부여하였다. 첫째, 본 승리를 민족정신의 부활이자 국가 정체성의 재활성화로 서술하였 다. 둘째, ‘여자배구 정신(nüpai jingshen)’을 시대적 요구에 부응하는 핵심 문화 가치로 재규정하면서 세대 간 전승의 상징으로 재현하였다. 셋째, 감독 Lang Ping을 영웅적이고 상징적인 여성 리더십의 구현체로 묘사하며, 그녀의 서사를 국가 정체성과 연결된 상징 으로 승격시켰다. 이러한 담론은 국내 대중의 애국심과 사회적 연대를 고취하는 동시에, 국제사회에 자주적이고 포용적인 ‘신중국(New China)’의 이미지를 투영하는 효과를 가 진다. 결론적으로, 본 연구는 2016년 여자배구팀의 승리에 대한 언론 보도가 단순한 스포 츠 기사에 그치지 않고, 문화적 의미화와 이데올로기 생산의 메커니즘으로 기능하고 있음을 밝히고자 하였다. 언론의 선택적 서사 구성과 상징적 프레이밍은 국가 정체성 형성 과 집단기억, 성별 재현 등 복합적 담론 형성에 기여하고 있으며, 이는 현대 중국이 스포 츠를 통해 어떻게 문화적 자아를 구축하고 국가의 소프트파워를 강화하고 있는지를 보여주는 중요한 사례라 할 수 있다.
