This study explores how political strife is narrativized in popular storytelling, with a focus on the romance fantasy genre in Korean web novels. Although these stories often center on women’s adventures and romance, it has been rare to see female characters directly engaged in political competition, and little scholarly attention has been paid to this theme. Focusing on The Villainess Lives Twice by Han Mint, this paper analyzes how a politically capable heroine, labeled a “villainess,” returns to the past and reconstructs both herself and her country. The novel presents the stages and strategies of political strife in a convincing way by drawing on elements familiar to Korean readers, such as imagined geography based on the four cardinal directions and the Confucian “rule of virtue.” At the same time, the narrative includes devices that reduce the risk of overly simplistic portrayals of good characters. These include integrating romantic plots, employing the scapegoat motif, and depicting individuals who act for a greater cause. Although this study is limited to single work, it provides meaningful insights for the genre. The use of imagined geography and Confucian ideology continues to appear in more recent web novels dealing with political conflict. Looking ahead, political strife will likely remain a vital theme in popular narratives, especially web novels. It is hoped that future works will offer vivid reinterpretations of 21st century Korean and global politics, portray a broader spectrum of women as political agents, present compelling rivals in political struggles, and critically reflect on the ideology of ethical governance.

이 글은 대중서사, 그중에서도 로맨스판타지 웹소설에 나타난 정쟁(政 爭)의 형상화에 주목하였다. 여성인물들의 모험과 사랑을 다룬 로맨스판 타지 소설에서도 그간 정치적 주체로서의 경쟁을 다룬 작품은 드물었고 관련 연구 또한 진행된 바가 없었다. 이 글은 한민트의 <악녀는 두 번 산 다>를 대상으로 ‘악녀’라는 악명을 쓴 정치적 역량을 갖춘 인물이 회귀를 통해 자신과 국가를 재건하는 과정에 주목하였다. 이 작품은 정쟁의 단계와 방식을 독자들에게 설득력있게 전달하고자 한국 독자들에게 익숙한 4방위의 심상지리와 유교의 정치이념인 ‘덕치’를 활용하였다. 반면 정치의 대중서사적 재현에서 ‘선한 지도자’에 대한 무조 건적인 선호의 위험을 낮추고자, 보완하는 장치 또한 설계하였다. 정쟁을 연애서사와 결합하거나 희생양 모티프를 사용하거나 대의(大義/代議)로서 의 개인들을 조망하는 것이다. 이 연구는 한 작품을 중점적으로 정쟁의 양상을 다루었다는 점에서 로 맨스판타지 장르 내 정쟁의 스펙트럼을 조망하지 못한 한계가 있다. 그러 나 익숙한 심상지리와 유교적 이념의 재현 등은 최근에도 정쟁을 다룬 웹 소설에 적용할 수 있는 발견이라는 점에서 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 앞으로도 정쟁은 대중서사 특히 웹소설에서 다양한 형태로 재현될 것인 데, 21세기 한국/세계질서의 생동감있는 재해석, 정치적 주체로서 여성인 물들의 다양한 스펙트럼의 제시, 정치적 경쟁자들의 매력적인 재현, 윤리 적 정치의 이데올로기적 고민 등이 웹소설의 정쟁에서 재현되기를 기대 하며 이와 관련된 논의 또한 후속 연구로 설정하고자 한다.
