Objectives The film Billy Elliot depicts a young boy’s journey of discovering identity and achieving personal growth through ballet in a conservative mining town. This study explores artistic authenticity and self-realization in the film, grounded in Nietzsche’s Apollonian-Dionysian theory. Methods Using a qualitative research approach, this study conducted textual and discourse analyses of key scenes. The analysis focused on Billy’s emotional changes, reactions of surrounding characters, and artistic expressions of dance, interpreted through Nietzsche’s theory of art. Results First, the initial encounter with ballet awakens Dionysian instincts, revealing conflicts with Apollonian social order. Second, Billy’s passion for ballet and repeated practice reflect the will to power, transcending social oppression to create new artistic values. Third, the improvised dance during the audition embodies Nietzsche’s concept of the Übermensch in artistic form. Fourth, the adult Billy’s stage performance illustrates the eternal recurrence, visually representing the integration of Apollonian form and Dionysian impulse. Conclusions The film demonstrates the process of self-realization through art. Applying Nietzschean philosophy to dance films expands the essential meaning of art and broadens interpretive horizons.

영화 『빌리 엘리어트』는 영국의 보수적인 탄광 마을을 배경으로 발레를 통해 자신의 정체성을 발견 하고 개인적 성장을 이루어가는 한 소년의 여정을 그린다. 본 연구는 니체의 아폴론적-디오니소스적 이 론을 바탕으로 영화 속 예술적 진정성과 자아실현 과정을 탐구하였다. 연구 방법은 질적 연구 접근법을 활용하여 주요 장면에 대한 텍스트 및 담론 분석을 수행하였으며 분 석은 빌리의 감정 변화, 주변 인물들의 반응, 무용을 통한 예술적 표현에 초점을 맞추어 니체의 예술 이 론으로 해석하였다. 연구 결과는 빌리의 발레와의 첫 만남에서 디오니소스적 본능을 각성시키며 아폴론적 사회 질서와의 갈등을 드러냈고 발레에 대한 열정과 반복된 연습은 ‘힘에의 의지’를 반영하여 사회적 억압을 초월하 고 새로운 예술적 가치를 창조하였다. 또한 오디션에서의 즉흥적 춤은 예술적 형식 속에서 니체가 말한 ‘초인(Übermensch)’ 개념을 구현하였으며 성인이 된 빌리의 무대 공연은 영원회귀 사상을 시각적으로 형상화하며 아폴론적 형식과 디오니소스적 충동의 통합을 보여주었다. 이러한 결과를 통해 영화는 예술을 통한 자아실현의 과정을 보여주며 무용 영화에 니체 철학을 적용 함으로써 예술의 본질적 의미를 확장하고 해석의 지평을 넓힐 수 있음을 확인하였다.
