This study aims to examine the characteristics of Korean traditional tightrope walking (Jultagi) by comparing it with similar performances across Eurasia. Although tightrope walking has been transmitted worldwide as a common form of folk performance, little academic attention has been given to whether the elements regarded as unique to Korean Jultagi also exist in other regions. For this purpose, performances from Cambodia, the United Kingdom/Ireland, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, China, and Japan were analyzed in comparison with Korean Jultagi, focusing on rope tension, use of props, acrobatic techniques, accompanying music, clown roles, singing, and instrumental performance. The analysis reveals several findings: first, the use of a fan as a balancing prop is also found in Cambodian and Vietnamese tightrope performances. Second, various acrobatic techniques on the rope appear in Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, and Japan. Third, the clown figure, which mediates between performer and audience, exists in Bangladeshi tightrope walking as well. Fourth, instrumental performance on the rope, such as violin playing, is observed in the British/Irish context, corresponding to depictions in Korean Buddhist paintings (Gamro-tang). Fifth, rope tension, which was traditionally loose, has become tighter in modern times with technological developments. These findings indicate that the distinctive features of Korean Jultagi lie in its systematic use of accompanying music, the comic dialogues (Jaedam), and the inclusion of singing integrated with acrobatic performance. Unlike other traditions, Korean Jultagi demonstrates a composite nature that combines physical skill, music, and verbal artistry, thereby highlighting its unique status in the history of Eurasian performance culture.

본고는 한국 전통 줄타기의 특징을 규명하기 위하여 유라시아 여러 나라의 줄타기를 비교· 고찰하였다. 줄타기는 세계 각지에서 전승되어 온 보편적 연희 양식이지만, 그동안 한국 줄 타기의 특징으로 지목된 요소들이 실제로는 타국에도 존재하는지에 대한 학술적 검토는 미 비하였다. 이에 본 연구는 캄보디아, 영국·아일랜드, 방글라데시, 베트남, 태국, 중국, 일본 등 7개국의 줄타기를 한국 줄타기와 비교하여 줄의 장력, 도구 사용, 체기(體技) 여부, 반주 음악, 어릿광대, 가창, 악기연주 등 세부 요소를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 줄광대가 부채를 들고 연희하는 방식은 캄보디아와 베트남에도 존재하였 다. 둘째, 줄 위에서 다양한 체기를 발휘하는 곡예 역시 방글라데시, 베트남, 중국, 일본에서 확인되었다. 셋째, 어릿광대의 존재는 방글라데시 줄타기에서 나타나 한국과 유사한 연행 구 조를 보여주었다. 넷째, 줄 위에서 악기를 연주하는 기예는 영국·아일랜드 줄타기에서 확인 되어, 감로탱 도상에 나타난 한국 줄타기의 옛 모습과도 연결된다. 다섯째, 줄의 장력은 과 거에는 느슨한 형태가 많았으나 근대 이후 과학기술 발달로 점차 높아지는 경향을 보였다. 이상의 비교를 통해 도출된 한국 줄타기의 독창적 특징은 체기와 밀접히 결합된 반주음악, 줄광대의 재담, 그리고 노래가 존재한다는 점이다. 한국 줄타기는 단순한 곡예를 넘어 음악· 언어·연희가 종합적으로 어우러진 공연예술적 성격을 지니며, 이는 세계 줄타기 문화사 속 에서 한국 줄타기의 위상을 새롭게 규정짓는 단서가 된다.
