Cultivating critical thinking is widely regarded as a central goal of education. Yet the concept varies depending on educational purposes and methods, and scholarship generally distinguishes between descriptive and normative approaches. The descriptive approach views critical thinking as a set of cognitive skills focused on processes of reasoning, while the normative approach emphasizes rationality, highlighting not only processes but also the quality of thought. This study argues that in teaching philosophy, strengthening critical thinking skills alone is insufficient; rather, critical thinking must be understood as a rational and practical activity. It is guided by reason as a regulative principle, but not as a decontextualized, abstract ideal. Instead, it requires sensitivity to concrete contexts. Accordingly, critical thinking education in teaching philosophy should provide opportunities for students to practice critical thinking by engaging in the activity of doing philosophy.

교육에서 비판적 사고 능력의 함양은 중요한 교육 활동으로 간주된다. 그런데 비판적 사고 개념은 교육 목적과 방법에 따라 강조되는 부분이 다를 수 있다. 비판적 사고 연구자 들의 연구를 보면 비판적 사고 개념은 크게 기술적 접근과 규범적 접근으로 나눌 수 있다. 기술적 접근은 비판적 사고를 인지 능력의 차원에서 사고의 과정에 집중하고, 규범적 접근은 비판적 사고가 전제하고 있는 합리성에 주목하여 사고의 과정뿐만 아니라 사고의 질을 강조한다. 본 연구는 철학교육에서의 비판적 사고는 비판적 사고기술의 역량 강화로 는 충분하지 않으며 합리성을 추구하는 이성적 활동이고 실천적인 행위임을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 비판적 사고는 이성적 합리성이라는 규제적인 원리를 따르지만 그것이 탈맥락적인 객관적인 이상을 추구하는 것이 아니라 구체적인 상황에서 맥락을 고려하는 사고임을 밝히고, 철학교육에서의 비판적 사고교육은 철학함을 통해 비판적 사고를 실천하는 사람이 될 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것임을 드러내고자 한다.
