This study aims to examine the inclusion and adaptation of repre- sentative old tales in English translations of Japanese old tale collections published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Prior to this, in Japan, the Japanese Fairy Tale Series (Chirimenbon Nihon Mukashibanashi Series) was published in the late 19th century under the planning of Japanese scholar Hasegawa TakeJiro. This series included numerous folk tales that were representative of the late Edo period, such as the Five Great Japanese Folk Tales, and it exerted a significant influence on subsequent English translations of Japanese folk tale collections. In English translations of Japanese folk tale collections, the inclusion frequency of Momotaro, Urashima, and The Wonderful Tea-Kettle was rel- atively high. This is believed to be due to the focus on motifs such as the birth of an extraordinary being, the transformation of a raccoon, and iheterogeneous-marriage story and visits to a fthe Another World. Additionally, in the translated version of Urashima, the main focus is not on the turtle’s gratitude, a motif common in modern interpretations, but on the marriage between a woman from the sea (another world) and a human. As the 20th century began, adaptations became more promi- nent, featuring active courtship or abduction by women. This reflects the influence of Western legends about mermaids (fairies).

본 연구는 19세기 말 20세기 초에 간행된 영역본 일본 옛이야기집에 수록된 대표적인 옛이야기의 수록과 개작 양상을 보고자 하였다. 이에 앞서 19 세기 말에 일본인 하세가와 다케지로의 기획으로 치리멘본「일본 무카시바나시 시리즈 Japanese fairy tale series」가 간행되었고 ‘일본 5대 무카시바나시’와 같은 근세에 이미 그 대표성을 가진 옛이야기들이 다수 수록되면서이후에 간행된 영역본 일본 옛이야기집에도 영향을 주고 있음을 확인하였다. 그 중에서도『모모타로』,『우라시마』,『분부쿠 찻주전자』의 수록 빈도가상대적으로 높았는데 이상탄생, 너구리의 변신 그리고 이류혼인과 이향 방문이라는 모티브에 주목했다고 보았다. 나아가 영역본『우라시마』의 경우현대에 전해지는 거북이의 보은이라는 요소가 아닌 바다(이계)의 여성과의혼인담이 주를 이루며 20세기로 들어서면서 개작 양상이 현저해지고 여성의 적극적인 구애 혹은 납치라는 전개를 보였다. 여기에는 서양의 전설로 전해지는 인어(요정)에 대한 이해가 반영되어 있었다.

本研究は、 19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて刊行された英訳日本昔話 集に収録された日本の代表的な昔話の収録と改作の様相を考察すること を目的とした。 欧米で刊行された日本昔話集に先立って、 19世紀末に長谷 川武次郎の企画によるちりめん本 『日本昔話シリーズ(Japanese fairy tale series)』 が刊行され、「日本五大昔話」 など、 近世において既にその代表性 を有する昔話が多数収録され、 後に刊行される英訳本日本昔話集にも影響 を与えていることを確認した。 その中でも 『桃太郎』、『浦島』、『文福の茶 釜』 の収録頻度が相対的に高く、 異端誕生、 たぬきの変身、 そして異類婚 姻と異郷訪問というモチーフが注目されたと考えられる。 さらに、 英語版 『浦島』 の場合、 現代に伝わる 「亀の恩返し」 という要素ではなく、 海 （異 界)の女性との婚姻譚が中心であり、 20世紀に入ると改作の傾向が顕著と なる。 特に、 女性の積極的な求愛または誘拐という展開の背景には、 西洋 の伝説に登場する人魚 （妖精） に対する理解が反映されていることを確認 した。
