This study systematically analyzes the spatial structure of John Logan’s play Red(2009), investigating the multidimensional meaning-making mechanisms across symbolic, social, generational, and philosophical spaces. Grounded in the theatrical spatial theories of Michael Issacharoff and Hanna Scolnicov, the research distills four analytical dimensions—symbolic, philosophical, social, and generational space—and combines close textual reading with performance analysis of the 2018 Wyndham’s Theatre revival. It explores how Redtransforms a single artist’s studio into a highly concentrated field of ideological tension. The findings reveal that the motif of ‘red’ operates as the play’s central symbol, repeatedly activated in stage visuals, dialectical dialogues, and pivotal plot developments, intensifying the symbolic tension between art and spirituality. At the social level, the play exposes structural conflicts between art and commerce, modernism and postmodernism; the generational dimension highlights tensions between two generations of artists grappling with belief systems and cultural adaptation; philosophically, the ‘red space’ creates a heterotopic theatrical environment that critiques modern cultural logic and accentuates art’s negational and spiritual mission. In conclusion, the spatiality of Redfunctions not as a static backdrop but as a dynamic cognitive apparatus and narrative driver that evolves through narrative progression and audience-performer interaction, propelling ideological discourse, structural conflict, and aesthetic critique. Theplay demonstrates expressive power by activating multidimensional spatial logic within a minimal physical setting to carry complex thematic agendas. However, this study is limited to a single-work, theory-centered analysis and excludes empirical studies of intercultural performance or audience reception. Future research may extend to such studies, deepening the theoretical and practical significance of theatrical space as a platform for social cognition and cultural production.

본 연구는 존 로건(John Logan)의 희곡 (붉은색, 2009)를 대상으로 공간 구조를 체계적으로 분석 하여 상징, 사회, 세대, 철학의 네 차원에서 의미 생성 과정이 어떻게 작동하는지를 규명하였다. 분석 틀 은 마이클 이사카로프(Michael Issacharoff)와 하나 스콜니코프(Hanna Scolnicov)의 극 공간 이론에 기반을 두었으며, 텍스트 세밀 독해와 2018년 런던 윈덤스 극장(Wyndham’s Theatre) 재연 자료 분석을 병행해 <붉은색>가 단일 화실을 고도화한 사상적 긴장 지대로 구축되는 방식을 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, ‘붉은색’ 은 작품의 핵심 기호로서 무대 시각, 인물 간 변증적 대화, 주요 사건 전개마다 활성화되어 예술과 정신 성 사이의 상징적 긴장을 증폭하였다. 사회적 차원에서는 예술과 자본, 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘 간 구조적 갈등이 드러났으며, 세대 차원에서는 두 세대 예술가가 신념 체계와 문화 적응을 둘러싸고 직면 한 긴장이 부각되었다. 철학적 차원에서 ‘붉은색 공간’은 ‘헤테로토피아’(heterotopia)에 가까운 관람 환경 을 조성해 근대성의 문화 논리를 비판하고 예술의 부정성과 정신적 소명을 재조명하였다. 결론적으로, <붉은색>의 공간은 정적인 무대 배경이 아니라 서사 전개와 관객-공연 상호작용 속에서 유동적으로 재 편되면서 사상, 구조적 충돌, 미학적 비판을 추동하는 인지 장치이자 서사 추진 동력으로 기능하였다. 본 작품은 극히 제한된 물리적 장소에서 다차원 공간 논리를 작동시켜 복합 의제를 효과적으로 담아내는 표 현력을 입증하였다. 본 연구는 단일 작품 분석과 이론 중심의 접근에 한정되어, 서로 다른 문화권의 연출 맥락이나 관객 수용 과정에 대한 실증적 검토를 포함하지 못했다. 향후 연구는 문화 간 번역적 연출 맥 락과 관객 수용 과정을 실증적으로 검증함으로써 극장 공간이 사회적 인지 플랫폼이자 문화 생산 매개체 로서 지니는 이론적·실천적 함의를 한층 심화할 수 있을 것이다.
