This study aims to define the concept of the Master Symbol in theatre directing and to analyze its role in visualizing the director’s concept and achieving unity in performance. While most directing literature rarely addresses the term explicitly, related ideas are often presented without a clear functional definition. By reviewing relevant literature and comparing similar concepts, this research clarifies the theoretical foundations of the Master Symbol and examines its practical functions in stage production. Two original productions—The French Envoys (2025) and Silkworm (2024)—are analyzed to explore how the Master Symbol operates within the overall symbolic structure of a performance. The findings show that the Master Symbol functions as a structural axis that visualizes the director’s central idea, integrating stage design, scene composition, and actor direction. It effectively links complex temporal–spatial flows, condenses thematic meaning, and communicates it intuitively to the audience, even under limited stage conditions. In The French Envoys, the traditional construction technique of “joining and fitting” symbolized cultural conflict and harmony, while in Silkworm, the multiple arrangement of bamboo blinds represented the dynamics of gaze, spatial hierarchy, and tension between characters. These symbols shaped both the visual tone and the interpretive framework of the productions. Ultimately, this study identifies the Master Symbol as a strategic device that organizes the performance’s network of meanings and connects the director’s interpretation with the audience’s experience. However, as the analysis is limited to two works, further research across diverse genres and empirical studies from an audience-reception perspective are needed to enhance the concept’s universality and scholarly completeness.

본 연구는 연극 연출 과정에서 ‘마스터 심벌(Master Symbol)’ 의 개념을 이론적으로 정립하고, 그것이 연출 개념의 시각화와 공연의 통일성 확보에 어떻게 기여하는지를 실천적으로 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 기존 연출 이론서에서는 마스터 심벌을 명시적으로 다루는 경우가 드물며, 유사 개념이 암묵적으로 제시 되거나 상징적 장치의 기능이 구체화되지 않은 채 활용되고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 이론적 공백을 보완 하고자 관련 문헌을 검토하고 유사 개념과의 비교를 통해 마스터 심벌의 정의와 기능을 고찰하였다. 또 한 실제 연출 사례인 연극 <불란서 특파단>(2025)과 <누에>(2024)를 중심으로 마스터 심벌이 공연 전체의 상징 구조에 어떻게 작용하는지를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 마스터 심벌은 연출가의 중심 개념을 시각화 하여 무대 디자인, 장면 구성, 배우 디렉팅 등 연출 전반을 통합하는 구조적 축으로 기능했으며, 특히 제 한된 무대 조건 속에서도 복잡한 시공간의 흐름을 효과적으로 연결하고 주제를 응축하여 관객에게 직관 적으로 전달하는 데 기여했다. <불란서 특파단>에서는 ‘이음과 맞춤’이라는 전통 건축기술을 심벌로 설정 하여 문화적 충돌과 조화를 시각적으로 형상화했으며, <누에>에서는 ‘발[簾]의 다중 배치’를 통해 시선의 권력과 공간의 위계, 인물 간 긴장을 표현했다. 이러한 상징들은 그 자체로 하나의 미장센을 구성하며 무 대의 시각적 구조와 정서를 형성하는 핵심 요소로 작용했다. 이처럼 마스터 심벌은 무대 위에서 하나의 통합된 이미지로 연출의 방향성과 미학을 드러내며, 디자이너와의 협업을 통한 공연 제작 과정에서도 중 심 개념을 공유하는 실천적 도구로 작용했다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 마스터 심벌이 공연 전체의 의미망 을 조직하고 연출가의 해석을 관객과 연결하는 전략적 장치임을 밝히는 데 의의가 있다. 다만 두 편의 작품 분석에 한정되어 있어 장르·형식별 적용 검토와 실증 자료가 부족하다는 한계가 있으며, 향후에는 다양한 장르를 대상으로 한 분석 틀 구축과 관객 수용 관점의 실증 연구를 통해 개념의 범용성과 완성도 를 높일 필요가 있다.
